Why am I buying expensive bird feeders.........

........and spending an hour filling them up each morning??? Apparently all I have to do is throw the birdseed on the driveway and everyone.....and I mean everyone......is happy!

"Driveway Diner" (now open for your convenience 24 hours a day....no lines.....no waiting.....fast food at its finest)

Some had more than feeding on their minds. Teenagers?

Community picnic.....6 Goldfinch, 2 Pine Siskin, and a Chipping Sparrow!

Cardinal checking out the "spa" accomodations.....or looking for wet worms.

The dove took a snooze after she ate

Mrs. Rose-breasted Grosbeak prefers the "Driveway Diner" over the feeders! The only birds I haven't seen eating in the driveway the last couple of days are the woodpeckers.....they prefer to "hang out" elsewhere.

Much like buying a gift, and watching the recipient play with the box. :)

Mary,

Its more natural for them to eat off the ground, thats the way they like it.

Wren: I like that comparison :-)

Roy: I suppose so, but many of them are quite accumstomed to feeders. I think part of it is the fact they don't like my dead feeder tree.....they want the leaves to grow back that should be there.

I just sprinkle the seed around too as most of it from the feeders lands there anyway. But I had to put up a "No take-aways" sign by the fruit. LOL!! They were just grabing it and flying off without allowing me time to even get a good look at them. Lovely post Mary. Hope the quilting went well.

Mary, I think you've found the solution to replacing your Dogwood tree! We have a lot of ground feeders also and when filling my feeders I always purposely spill a lot on the ground underneath them.
Beautiful buntings!

And we thought drive-in eateries were a thing of the past!

Hi Mary, Just trying to catch up after being away for a week, great posts this week and great photos, the Heron with the fish is an excelent capture, and the glass work in the exhibition is stunning. Mike.

What colorful birds came to your diner! You are right about the feeder....birds are not picky and will eat off the ground!

Thanks everyone! The only problem with the "driveway diner" is that some birds don't stand out well against the gravel for pictures and they aren't quite as close to the house :-) I'm sure I will stick with a mixture. It is awfully handy though and I'm glad to know they like eating there if I'm in a hurry. I get lots of seed on the ground under the feeders and will eventually have a crop of small sunflowers growing there....which I leave and the birds love. I'll have to find some pics from last year. I probably have the "messiest" garden in the world and am the bane of my neighbors....but the birds like me :-)

That is just the cutest story! You are so right, they do feed from the ground if there are no feeders. I had to chuckle at this one!!

Aunt B: Thanks! The birds are really into this idea of a driveway diner....especially some of the larger ones that have trouble landing on the feeders.
