This Green Heron was stalking the edge of the lake at the Howell Wetlands.
He was not very close and I had trouble getting good pictures or even identifying him!
He never did stretch his neck out.....which would have helped me when I was looking him up in the bird book!
I would love to see him a bit closer......maybe next time! I'm becoming a regular visitor at the wetlands. It is a fascinating place that I had never even been to before this year!

They're beautiful. I watched (in horror) a little green heron swoop down and grab a mallard baby one year. I screamed like a crazy woman trying to scare the heron - to no avail. I know this goes on in nature, just wish I didn't have to witness it!
Annie: How terrible! I'm like you...I know it happens and is the rule of nature, but I don't want to see it happen. I didn't realize that a heron would eat a baby duck :-(

That Green Heron has such wonderful colors - I can see why you would be drawn back again and again to this special place! Your bird photos are fantastic - the Indigo Bunting on your sidebar is so beautiful! A very interesting Sky Watch photo, too.

April:Thank you! I thought those clouds rows were sort of strange. The Indigo bunting is really beautiful...hard to believe a bird can be that blue.

Mary, I think you are becoming hooked on birdiing, I can tell by your posts and wonderful pictures! Having a nearby wetlands to visit on a regular basis is great. What a great find the Green Heron must have been; I have only seen one once before and that was in the Florida Everglades several years ago. Thanks for sharing yours.
Mike: Hello! I think we all play a lot of catch-up trying to see everything in our limited time :-) I hope I see the heron closer, too. If I had a better camera with more lens, it would help.
Ann: I hope that is right and we are finally introduced! I do love birds and a new one always excites me :-) I may start haunting the wetlands.

Saphotographs: Then you probably knew it a lot sooner than I did! I had to get out a bird book and none of the pictures really looked like what I saw because he had his neck down.

These are wonderful! I don't see them often enough. One of my favorite herons, Mary.
JB: I would like to have seen it closer. I went back looking today but didn't see it this time.
Sandpiper: All of these water birds are rather unusual for me, since I just discovered this place to see them.
