It was a beautiful day Thursday, so I drove out to New Harmony to see if I could find some birds along the river. I didn't see many birds and certainly none close enough for a picture.
....but I enjoy looking at the Wabash River and the bridge. That alone was worth the drive.
I wandered near the river shooting whatever caught my eye.
This snag and the cracked mud were about all that was there.
I like the mosaic look of the cracked mud......the cracks were really deep and I kept wanting to try picking up the pieces and move them around :-)
Hedge Apples along the river!......or more acccurately Osage Orange fruit. I've always been curious about them and looked them up on the internet to learn more. I learned that squirrels love them! I'll have to gather a few for my Sunday Squirrels :-) I think we have one tree along the creek, so maybe that is why my squirrels hang around.

The cemetery is on a hill.....look at those steps! I asked my husband why with all the flat land in southern Indiana, they would choose a hill for the cemetery and he said "because they can't grow corn on it". Hmmmm......makes sense to me.
In town I spotted this building with beautiful phlox growing outside and it had 3 black swallowtails fluttering around the flowers, so I had to stop!
They prefered fluttering to posing, so this is the best shot I got. They were a bit tattered.
Further down the street were these really interesting cabbage-like plants. Don't know what they are but loved the variety of shapes and sizes!

That was a nice drive. You did see so many interesting things even though there were no birds.
The butteflies are always a favorite of mine, and I don't think we have those around here.
The cabbage like plants might be some sort of succulant. Interesting.
Speaking about skunks, we had a visitor around 4AM this morning nosing around under my feeders, and left his "calling card".

I have never seen Hedge apples before.

Becky: I wasn't sure which butterfly it was....the top markings were very faint, but the bottom side of the wings was very pretty. Unfortunately they would nto stop moving! Oh, dear...sorry about the skunk. My little black skunk was back last night...totally black except a tiny white stripe across the top of its head. Hides well in the dark :-) Mine haven't left any calling cards yet, because I keep the cats in. The neighbor is afraid to walk her dog because of them.
Cicero: I don't see the hedge apples often, but have always thought they were really neat looking. I wondered about ornamental cabbages....I've seen colorful ornamentals before, but had never seen such a variety of sizes and shapes as these. Will check out the site...thanks!

Hi Mary, great photos again, I haven't seen those apples before or the Catalpa tree either. Are those black swallowtails? Not sure as I am still learning and trying to identify. What a pretty cemetery on the side of the corn-free hill. Had to smile at your husband's comment. The cabbage plants were very interesting and I will look at the site 'Cicero Sings' left. That's a perfect day--just wandering with your camera. I agree that the pretty plants are a decorative cabbage. We use them a lot as a winter plant here. LOL@ can't grow corn on the hill.

What a lovely day! Those last plants are interesting. They didn't look cabbagey to me at first. I enlarge one of the pictures and saw that they were nothing like the "hens and chicks" that I thought at firs they lookied like.
Such beauty! I love cracked mud, or whatever it's called, the patterns are wonderful. And you must know by now how dear to my heart cemeteries are...but your cabbages...they steal the show!
