The sunflowers growing around the front step are getting very straggly (is that a word?), so I broke off some of the larger heads and spiked them on the dead tree and boy did I make the Goldfinches happy!

Look how methodically they empty it seed by seed!
I look like a flower among the leaves......vine leaves since this is a dead tree!
The female got a few, but the males hogged most of the fresh seeds!

This sparrow was trying to figure out what all the fuss was about and how he could get some.

All gone!They emptied at least 6 heads yesterday! I wish I had a lot more.
(Question: Those of you that have used collages in your blog....what program do you use to make them?)

I use photoshop, but you can try picasa, I think it is free.
Great shots of beutiful birds. I have a few sunflowers in the garden, they are from the birdsfeeding in the winter and I look forward to feeding them too the birds, again :)
These are the perfect props for a photo shoot. What fun it must have been watching them feed. Great pictures.

Moseplassen: My sunflowers are all volunteers that fell from the feeders over the winter and spring. I wish I had a few more! Will check out Picasa, too.
Ann: They certainly do love them and have really been hanging around a lot lately. All of my year-round birds seem to be showing up a bit more often right now.

I love how you speared the sunflower heads on a branch like that. Next year I'll have to try and grow some and do the same. Last year we had a few volunteer sunflowers grow (bird discards) and it was fun to see the squirrel and the birds empty them out.

Cicero: I always get a lot of volunteers because of the huge volume of seed that I put out for the birds. I start letting some of them grow in late spring. They can look a bit unsightly as they begin to droop and lean and get knocked over, so this seems like a good way to save the heads and make it a bit easier for the birds.

Wow! I loved they way you did that...spearing it so the birds could get at it!
I use Photoshop Elements 5. I think they now have Version 6 out...and it is relatively inexpensive...$79-$99...a lot less expensive than full blow Photoshop.
Oh, I've been buying dried sunflower heads, but I think I'm going to have to plant some of my own now that I've seen this. Very cool pictures, too.
I'd suggest trying Picassa first, because it's free. It will let you get some experience using photo editing software, and if you decide you need a more powerful program, you can upgrade to photoshop elements or photoshop cs.

As everyone else has said, what a great idea to spear them like that. I think that sparrow was 'smudge' from my garden wanting to get in on the act. Not very likely I guess as you're several thousand miles away! (-:

Keri, Wren, Sandy: Thanks...I will try the Picasa for sure since it is free :-) The goldfinches really love those seeds and ignore the store bought when these heads are there...must be a freshness thing. Wish I had more for them! Maybe I could still plant some more.
Oh Dear!!! How did I miss this one Mary?? I must have been sleeping yesterday!! They sure made short work of that sunflower didn't they? LOL!!
Joan: I'm surprised at how fast they can clean one off. I wish I had a bunch more. I guess I can drop more seeds and water them :-) They were very disappointed today, because I didn't have any more to hang up.

The birds are eating me out of house and home! Such pigs they are.
