This is neither a hopper or dragon, but I like phlox and saw it in the same place as the critters :-)

Poor dragonfly looks kind of tatty. A beautiful butterfly and hoppers too.
I think the creation of a grasshopper must have been a feat of amazing engineering! Just look at its body structure!

Second - I love your monarch photo! I've spent the last 10 days in Missouri trying trying trying to get even a rather bad photo of a monarch and only succeeded yesterday photoing one that is definitely battle scarred. I swear he heard my prayers.."Please, just let him hold still!" And, God bless him, that monarch did until I took my very last picture - focused and beautiful (relatively speaking). Then he flitted off without a care in the world! Lovely!

I always get a kick out of grasshoppers and how far they can jump for their size.
When I was a kid we used to catch them and say they would spit tobacco juice on your hand.

Annie: Only the hoppers know for sure :-) I've been chasing a lot of butterlies and getting nothing, too. Pretty soon there ought to be lots of Monarchs heading south.

Holy cow, your hopper photos are amazing... well, all your photos are amazing, but those guys are just so intricate and otherworldly looking. I feel lost in a wonderland, every time I visit your blog.
