We stopped by the wetlands yesterday and got a very nice surprise.
The usual turtles everywhere.....that one in the middle looks like a different kind?
"Ahoy there.....I see land ahead!"
A pair of Mallards hiding beneath the leaves
The usual geese and turtles.....must have seen 100 turtles at least!
All of a sudden..........
......out of the woods come 3 deer, plunging into the creek! I've never seen deer here before.
The geese seem to be very curious about these strange intruders.

Off they go towards the turtles.
"Oh, look....deer in the backyard...grab the camera!"
Up the bank to safety and out of sight.
"One of these things is not like the others....."

.....and this one must have been asleep, because we were standing looking right down on it and it didn't slip off into the water!

Okay,it's final now. I am going to start going birding w/ you since you always seem to find the coolest things!!! Awsome! I can't get over all of the turtles.

Wow, that place is just crawling with so many turtles. I'm not sure if the turtle in the first picture is different, it looks to me like a massive old female, they get darker as they age.
If you look closely at the "through the leaves" picture, the first turtle is a painted turtle, while all the rest are red-eared sliders.

Tom: Always happy to oblige with the turtles :-) Glad you explained about that darker looking one and for identifying the painted turtle. If you ever want to make a 5-6 hour drive over to southern Indiana, I would introduce you to this turtle heaven :-)
I love this series...always if I have time I have to count the turtles. That place is crawling with them, isn't it? I think I saw a couple of heads peeping out of the water yesterday, but not positive. You must really be farther along in spring than we are.

Rose: I should call this place turtle heaven...obviously they breed very well here :-) They were all up enjoying the sunshine on the logs.
Riches: Mike did a good job with that one! Usually when they are that close they slip into the water and disappear.
WOW!You are fortunete to have been there and with a camera to cacth those deer.Reminds me of wildlife films from Africa.O.K. you only had a few deer as opposed to thousands.

Great post Mary. I love those deer head sticking up out of the water, specially with the pricked up ears! That certainly is Turtle heaven, must be amazing when all the baby Turtles are out!

Great post. I love how you kept them in sequence and surprised us with the deer just like you were. That was a lot of turtles. It's always amazing to me that they will line up on a log like that. I've yet to see them back down. I wonder if they back down or just fall off. :-D
If there's turtles out, warm weather must be headed our way!
