Went back to Henderson today. If we didn't know what those nests were before, we certainly do now! Each one had at least one heron on it today! A real "Heron Heaven" apparently!
I think that 7 in one tree was the most I counted :-)
Heron high-rise
Every floor occupied
Several times they spooked and took off and then landed again, so I got to try for flight shots.
Part of the time the sun came out and the color and focus of my photos improved some.
There are two in that nest in the middle.
Some flying in, some flying out
6 herons at the top!
I don't know how this one balanced way up there!
All of this activity was surrounding the eagle nest and as you can see, she was "at home".
Her mate was at the top of a tree in the distance watching.
He moved in at one point and I think they changed places during one of the heron flights.
If you look real close at this photo, that heron flying in the center looks like it has the eagle sitting on its head! The eagle is much further back, of course :-)
Mike took the next 3.....all of the herons stirred up. I think I counted 30 in one photo.
This was a nice shot he got of them all spread out nicely.
And of course he got a great shot of the eagle that flew away, while I was still trying to catch up with it. Sigh.....he does the flight shots so well, and I can't seem to get the hang of it.

I've only seen a heron rookery like that once while kayaking off the coast. I'm sure it's still there but I haven't been back. Great pictures.
Eve: I've never seen a rookery before, so this was exciting.
Tom:I hope we get to see young ones. Watching through binoculars is pretty neat...wish my camera lens was a bit longer.

Yes, a rookery. I wish I could be close to any rookery. I saw rookeries in Florida last year, they are awesome when the babies are there. Hope the Eagle doesn't get the babies. Also, I think I saw the beginning of a Heron rookery starting while we were in Fla. Just 3 nest when we left.

Great place for photography Mary. In the begining of the breeding season like this there will be a lot of activity and we all know how nice it is for the eagle to have such a handy food supply.

How cool! I actually had my own little sighting of herons and nests. I don't think there were as many as you saw but it sure was exciting.
