I was excited to find Meadowlarks at a local park on Saturday! The area where we saw them is an old landfill that is "off limits" to people, so I hope they are happy there.
I wish the photos were better, but they were quite a distance away and I was just happy to get any photos.
When we first built our house there were no other houses around us and we had Meadowlarks walk through the side yard every year. Then when the other houses were built, I never saw them any more.
I just love their bright yellow!
I could see his head back singing :-)
I got a little closer to this one, but he wouldn't turn around for a front view.
The side of the head shows better here.
This one decided he had posed long enough :-)
This same old landfill meadow has all of these pipes sticking out of it to release the gases, and a couple of Kestrel were sitting on this one.....way far away, so not very clear.

Wow. Mary we would definitely like some of them on this side of the pond.
Kallen: There is a big sign saying to stay out of this area, which is very frustrating :-) I plan to keep going back and hope to see one come a bit closer one of these days.
Roy: Wish I could send you some, but since I seldom see them myself, I can't help you out :-) They are so pretty with their bright yellow chest and that black V on it.
Love the bright yellow, I've never seen a meadow lark in my life. I'd go nuts if I saw one.
Mary, these pictures are fine...but I do know what you mean about wanting to get closer.
I have seen one or two at a distance at the strip pits...we had them at home and I miss them to this day so am thrilled to see them at all.
Several years ago when the orchard I worked for went into business with another guy t raise strawberries, I did get to see them down there all the time.
His yellow chest shone brightly - beautiful! Another bird I wish I could see too!

Thanks for the memories. I've never seen a meadowlark here tho we had them in MO. Such pretty birds and I love their song.

I don't think we have Meadowlarks near here, but just because I haven't seen them doesn't mean they aren't here. They are so pretty.
About those Orchids. Many of them will stay in bloom for 3 weeks or more. Makes the wait all the more worth while.

Last year I saw a Meadowlark and a Killdeer having a very loud discussion in my backyard. It is the only Meadowlark I have seen outside of the GSMNP. Would love to see another one. I got about close as you did. They are hard to get close to.

Thank you everyone! For those that don't see Meadowlarks, I think it is because they need a large expanse of open grass or meadow, and how often do any of us see that around us that isn't mowed regularly?? I had them every year when there were several empty lots next to me, but now I never see them at my house. I was really excited to see them at this "off limits" old landfill. Nice to know that an old landfill is good for something other than odors and dangerous leaking of bad stuff. I will have to look at some of my other "wild" spots like Blue Grass and see if I find any.
What a beautiful meadowlark. I am getting a little bored with the same birds that visit and there is not much variety.
Mary: I would like to see a Meadowlark, maybe some day.
Sandy: My home birds haven't been very exciting lately either. If I didn't get out and about, I would lose interest.
Tom: They are beautiful birds with that yellow chest. Go find an open meadow in your area and I bet you have them.
