I'm so excited! Yesterday I discovered a chickadee pair moving into the gourd birdhouse I made! Thank you, Eve, for telling me how to make it! I was hoping for wrens, but a Chickadee is even better. We hung this gourd from the old basketball rim at the end of the drive near the maple tree and a lot of bushes and some pine trees of the neighbor's. I didn't think anyone was showing interest and I was just getting ready to have Mike move it to a different location, when the Chickadee came flying out!

Scaring off an intruder from the feeder. Red-Bellied Woodpeckers are masters at intimidation!
Having won the day.....enjoying a little sunflower seed.
The Goldfinches are beginning to change color.
My violets are beginning to take over the yard.
Mouse....contemplating a daffodil (or waiting for a bird)
Later in the day we went to New Harmony and I will post some photos from there tomorrow, but on the way home we saw a Kingfisher up on the telephone wires! That surprised me for some reason. We turned the car around and went back and it turns out the wires were right across from a little creek.
I got a couple of decent shots of him sitting in the tree by the creek. Wish there were not twigs across him.
I can't get over how massive their beaks look!
For a day that began rainy and gloomy, the day ended up sunny and full of surprises!

The chickadees around here are starting to pair up. I need to get some bird houses built. This year I need to figure out how to keep the squirrels out so the chickadees can use them.

That gourd feeder is awesome! (Hey Eve - what about me?! I"d like to know how to make it too! LOL) Those pics of the chickadee building his nest and going into the gourd are precious! Can't wait to see the babies!!!
Shelley: It's easy to make once you have a dried out gourd. Drill a 1/2" hole and shake out the stuff. I'm so glad it is where I can watch it fairly easily without disturbing them.

You have such a variety of birds. Right now all I have are Grackles, Cowbirds, Red Wings, and the ever present Mourning Doves. A few Chick-a-dees, but the woodpeckers don't come around much.
Can't wait for the violets here too.

I love the chickadee gourd house. Lucky you, to have a taker on the house. We put up a box house last year but alas, no takers. We thought the rent pretty reasonable too.
I love this idea Mary. Some people are so clever!! Well now, Mouse seems to be in deep thought, probably wondering how to chase Star away so he can get more treats instead. :)

Great post Mary and how lovely to have the chickadees nesting. We have a bird house but no residents yet. I sometimes put out scrap ends of wool to see if the birds are interested in using to decorate their nurseries. A x

How exciting to see the Chickadees. I bought a book over the weekend that shows how to make these type of nest boxes. So very cool. Love all your photos again, and that one of Mouse contemplating her daffodil is so cute.
Chickadees are so entertaining! I had one checking out one of my bird houses yesterday! It will be fun to see if they move in!
