I had two odd colored birds this week. The first has been to my feeders before....
....a very light colored Goldfinch. Is this an example of being leucistic? I don't know, but it is much lighter than any other Goldfinch I have ever seen. Here it is in the back with a normal one in the front.
On the ground with a normal Goldfinch you can really see the difference.
Then I had this odd House Finch show up that has much lighter color than the normal reddish ones. Sort of "peachy".
A normal rosy one.
My little Chickadee..dee...dee.
I think the Junco does a much better job of "blending in" than the corn cob.
The Red-Bellied was concentrating so hard it had its eye closed.
Just a very cute Titmouse sitting on one foot.
...... and a very cute and cold Wren squatting in the seeds.
One of my White-Throated Sparrows. I have several pair.
A female Hairy Woodpecker looking very silly.
It was hard to get them both in the same shot through my little sidelight windows, but here is a Hairy male on the left and a Downy on the right! You can see the size difference here. I wish I always had them together! Sometimes I'm not sure which one I have.

I am fascinated by the talons on the Red-Bellied Woodpecker! I got so interested that I tried to find good "claw" shots of other birds, but most don't crop as nicely as this one. Bird feet are strange to study.

BTW what does the woodpecker eat? I was always sure they can only eat insects (due to the form of their beak and their stomack functions) until this Nowember when I saw a Woody eat bread. I was really surprised and now I see woodpeckers on your pics eating something.. what do they eat?
My feeder is getting more and more active so hopefully I'll be getting photos of all the birds that visit.
Great group Mary. I have had those"peachy" finches too, but haven't seen any this year so far. I've also had some that are sort of orangy on their backs.
Brrrrr, it's -19ยบ here this morning. I filled the feeders last night, so the "gang" can get right to breakfast early.

You've got a great bunch of birds Mary. That last shot I was more focused on the Red-bellies feathers....they seem a bit guinea like!! Look at the squares!!
Some excellent shots here! My favorite today is the Titmouse, it's so cute!
Aluajala: I believe that insects are their main diet, but at this time of year that is probably difficult to find. They love both the suet and the sunflower seeds when they come to the feeders. I just bought some suet that has insects in it, but haven't put it out yet. Will be looking forward to seeing if they like it!
John: I know some people don't like feeder shots, but it is a lot easier than the wild and much better close-ups for studying the birds. Good luck with that feeder!
Becky: when we got to Arizona I have seem the more orange looking ones. Still cold here, but not that bad!
Eve: I've been studying the Red-Bellied's feathers, too and had a shot yesterday that showed that checkerboard pattern better. It'a a fascinating bird!
Rottlady: Yes, he was at his cutest yesterday :-) Sort of sweet and fluffy in that shot.
I just love your bird photos. I used to be an avid bird feeder, and in the wintertime my backyard would have hundreds of birds. I would cover my windowsills with seeds and the birds would feed just inches from us. We rescued a kitten, and for the first time we owned as cat. Moses the cat was an amazing hunter. He caught mice, squirrels, rabbits, and birds. I quit feeding the birds because it didn't seem fair to lure them to there death.

Richies: Oh, dear! My cats are fat and lazy and just think about chasing birds. They also spend most of their time in the house, so I feel pretty safe. Can't do anything about the stray black cat that hangs around, but he doesn't seem to attack the birds.
You have such a fun group coming to visit you. It has been slow in my garden (due to the hawk), but I hope to see some little guys out there this weekend. Great photos!

That is a cutie Carolina Wren. Ours will just sit in the plate and relax... They are such cute birds!!!!

Betsy: thanks! This is more than just their winter coloration. This one is so much whiter than the others. Do you have photos of ones like that? I'd like to see if it is the same thing. I just have the one. The wren was very cute sitting there and I just wish the chain hadn't been hanging in front of him.

George: It was the first time I ever saw both together. I had the males and females of both that day. Good thing I had 2 suet feeders close. In the shot of the red-bellied woodpecker there is a downy in the front right out of focus.
Dorothy: This is the time of year when I have the most variety of birds and a lot of them.
