Some of the home birds....

Suddenly the usual 6+ goldfinches have increased to a flock of 15 or more! Here they are enjoying the "Driveway Diner"

If something spooks them, they fly up to the tree and one or two are always at the tree feeders. All are beginning to look alike....no more showy bright yellow males!

They love the fountain and sometimes 2 or more will try to drink at the same time.

They love the water, but don't play in the birdbath like the sparrows.

The Titmouse prefers the "head in the bucket" method. I decided not to take down the ant guards even though I took down the hummingbird feeder. These little birds really love drinking out of it and until we start having freezing weather, I figure.. why not?

I think there are 4 Titmice total and they love the suet and sunflower seeds both.

Mrs. Downy sometimes has to discourage them, so she can have some suet :-)

My little sparrow still sitting around, but looking perkier today unless it is a different one.

He had this "loose feather" problem today......one feather sticking out to the side.

The Chickadee has taken a real liking to this feeder, which makes me happy because none of the other birds seem to like it and the seeds get stuck in it and don't dispense well.

He selects a seed and then turns around and sits like this while he pecks on it :-)
They are so precise and careful as they hold it between their toes and work on it.

I always enjoy your bird photos. We have fewer goldfinches. Some are going south and I don't blame them;)

I wish I would get some tufted titmice at my feeders. My father has them at his feeders but there are none around my farm. Maybe someday.

I do have lots of downys and I really enjly them.

I like all your shots, but wonder about the little sparrow. It looks lonely to me.

Eve: Mike made the fountain. The frog ball is a lightweight foam decorative piece we found at Lowe's. Mike just drilled a hole through the center, added tubing and a pump underneath and we set it in a low dish (also from Lowe's!) It has held up for at least 3 years now. I put it away in the winter and we spray painted it this past year with a bumpy spray to spruce it up.

Marnie: your goldfinches must be coming to my house now! I suddenly have a whole flock of them and they will stay all winter. I hope you get a Titmouse eventually. Hang those little wire type feeders...they love to cling.

Helen: I guess the goldfinches are moving south and we are on the end of the line :-)

Rose: This little sparrow manages to look so sad, like it wishes its mom was still around. He seems fat and I see him eat. Maybe he is not real healthy for some other reason. I have a couple of them, I think.

Joan: they really do pick favorite spots. that 2-liter bottle feeder I have is the most popular feeder of all! I really should buy a few more of those connectors that turn them into feeders. Not the greatest looking, but they really like it....all the finches, chickadee, titmouse, even cardinals. I hate filling it because of the narrow neck.

Hi Mary, I too love the water fountain, great that it's home-made too. My fav pic out of this lot is the woody woodpecker.

Great pictures as usual. The Godfinches look kind of drab now.

Jenny: I love all the woodpeckers and the Downy is my most faithful all year round.

Ruth: They do look drab for winter and much harder to tell males from females.

Terrific pictures of your little friends Mary. I must get back to bird watching soon, although there aren't too many around right now. Like you I have plenty of sparrows, and lots of House Finches. The Chickadees are beginning to return, and I did see a Nuthatch today.

Awwww... These were great. They're so cute, especially that last one. And I can't believe the shot of the one drinking out of the fountain. Awesome!

Nice photos, they know winter is on its way so they need to fatten up.

Becky: We still have very warm weather, but that should change very soon and then the birds will really arrive. Right now I have more Goldfinches than anything else!

2sweetnsaxy: Chickadees are just cute no matter what they do :-) I love trying to photograph the water coming out of that fountain.

John: Yes, and they love to fatten up at my expense! Time to start buying tons of bird food!

Mary..I am still hearing begging calls from goldfinch and they are still being fed. It really seems late in the season for them. I see you too have the young house sparrows. They really increase rapidly with the 2-3 broods every summer. Love the dee and titmouse. My little guys love the ant cups too...
