For those who might be getting bored with my water fowl close-ups, here is a little goldfinch that was so funny to watch. Everytime it landed on this feeder it didn't seem to be able to stop this "wing flutter". When it sat other places it was just fine. It was odd to see it try to eat while that wing just fluttered away.

LOL!! Slightly unsteady there is it? Maybe it is just young and has not earnt the art of balancing yet!!
Funny video, maybe it was doing it to keep other birds away so it would have the seed all to itself.

Mary, I think the poor little thing has a problem with its leg or foot. I notice in your picture that only one foot is resting on the perch while the other foot is behind it. The same thing is happening in the video. Does it have a wider of bigger perching space at other places where it lands? Sometimes unfortunate accidents happen to their legs or feet. We had a White-throated Sparrow here this weekend that has only one foot and it had difficulty landing in a tree and was awkward for a second or so before it regained its balance.
I thought it acted like it was off balance also! Sure is a sweetie though.
I enjoyed the little video and yes, that wing sure looks nervous...
For whatever reason, it's not using the outside foot. If there is a problem, you will probably see it behaving this way somewhere else. I hope it's ok.

You guys are more observant than I am. There is a piece of duct tape hanging down from the perch (I wrap them with duct tape against the cold in the winter) and I didn't realize that her foot was also hanging behind it. When she lands on the tree limbs, I guess the wider space makes her more secure. I try to put food in a variety of places to help anyone and she may like the tray feeders a lot better.....or the food in the driveway.

Mary that's a shame about the Goldfinch. It certainly looks to have a broken leg. I observed a chaffinch the other day who had a foot missing altogether and he fluttered just like that at a bird feeder. Birds do get a lot wrong with legs and feet unfortunately

Roy: I always hate seeing injured birds, but at least if they come to my feeders I can try to provide a meal that they can get to one way or another. She seemed to be fine when she sat on tree limbs, so I guess she compensates somehow, and at least her wings are fine, which gets her away from predators.
I'm not tired of the birds. I'm wondering if maybe it's part hummingbird. :-)
Awww that is sad. I hope it will do ok. My guinea's are prone to leg problems. I have one "Gimpy" who I never thought would walk again but she has come a long way and not only gimps along with the rest but she is the best flyer of all.
I do worry about the ones with foot and leg problems, but am amazed at how well the hurt animals struggle along and survive!
