The first full week in October is always Fall Festival week in Evansville. I can't believe we left town during this "big occasion"! It is my understanding that this is one of the largest street fairs/festivals in the country. It lasts for 6 full days. 
During that time, 6 blocks of west Franklin Street are blocked off to traffic and lined with food booths. Lunch hours and all evening long are packed (this is an early crowd and not typical).......
.....with rides.....
....more rides.....
.....and chances to win stuffed animals or live goldfish or whatever....
......see everyone you know......
....and shake hands with every politician running for office in the November elections locally!
The food booths support every local church, school marching band, boy scout troop, or other good cause you might want to give money to.The food itself is heavy on fried stuff, but there is a lot of variety. Brain sandwiches are one of the traditional offerings along with Pronto Pups, strombolis, bratwurst and more.....
....new items show up every year. Chocolate dipped bacon????
....also called Muddy Pig (I refused to try this....sorry....I don't eat brain sandwiches either!)
You can find "deep fried" anything.....not exactly a health fair!
...everyone is looking for something to entice the customers to their booth. Some groups make this their main fund raiser of the year!

....cobbler with ice cream......(groan) Maybe it is a good thing we only went one night.
Some booths get very creative....."Man can not live by bread alone".
The USI Art Club's booth was pushing corn with an artistic flair... 
On Monday night the kids take part in a "lighthouse" parade. They used to take shoeboxes, cut windows, add a lighted candle, and drag them with a string.......now they are more creative and it is a judged contest for the kids.
Kids waiting for it to be darker and the parade to begin....
....I like the birdhouse lighthouses :-)
....everyone has a great time. The whole week is very family oriented with talent contests, entertainment, king and queen from the middle schools, tug-of-war contest with the schools, pet parade, etc. I imagine for the houses in the area it is mainly a parking nightmare they tolerate once a year. Lots of money is raised, and the Nut Club donates large amounts to all the local schools.

Mannry, this looks like it would be a yummy good time. What a wonderful variety is offered as well. The week must be full of wonderful community spirit!! It looks like a great place to live.
Enjoy your time away.Your festival reminds me of ours in the end of August.Too many people for me.
DO they still have the Buffalo Bill Museum in Des Moines?
I don't know which is worse: the choc dipped bacon or the toasted ravioli?? Did not know you could do either let alone eat them afterwards!! LOL!! ANyway, I guess everyone there is having a good time and that is what counts.
Brain sandwiches--Not for me either what ever they are, but the whole festival looks like fun if only to walk around and take pictures.

Your Fall Festival reminds me of our annual Fryeburg Fair which is the largest in Maine and the oldest running agricultural fair in the U.S. It happens during the first week of October also.
Short on time, but had at least make a pitstop here!

And hey - at least you got a little bit of the street fair. And the prices are quite civil. Looks like great fun! And that I wish you for your Iowa trip!
