Cardinal.....

The Northern Cardinal is the Indiana state bird. A very handsome fellow that I can count on seeing every day. Right now they look really good. I think these are young ones that are probably from this years youngsters.
They don't like to pose and if they notice any movement they are off very quickly. They tend to see my camera light as it focuses and that usually is enough to scare them away.

This female didn't seem to see me and was less jumpy, which is another reason I think she is young.
I've been putting seeds in the ant guards now that I have taken the hummingbird feeders down and she thought it was her own private cup to eat out of.
The sunlight wasn't in the best place for these, but I take what I can get!

The male cardinal is certainly a very handsome bird and the female is pretty. If she is not as striking, it is because her function is so much more important! I also like feeding my garden birds and they give me great pleasure. At the moment it is spring here and the fruit eaters are neglecting the fruit table as there are many more interesting berries to be had!

NO cardinals in the west. I'd love to see one in the flesh.

Eleanor: I always think the female is pretty, too with her touches of red and her red beak. Less flashy, but still beautiful.

Ruth: They are so ordinary for me, that I don't always take photos...and because they are so quick to fly away. I guess that is true for most of us, that we sometimes ignore the ones that come every day. I love seeing them in winter against snow.

Mary: What a fun post with a neat look at our state bird also. They are spooky when you get close.

I think you got great pictures of your state bird. We certainly enjoy the cardinals that come to our feeders, but haven't gotten such great pictures.

I love the Cardinal. They're such funny characterful birds with a nice tune too! (-: I wish they were an everyday bird for me too!

Still have very few birds coming to the feeders. And unfortunately, none of my feeders are in ideal picture-taking places. (sigh)

All good photos, but my pick is the last one, the female cardinal never gets enough attention.

Cardinals are just about my favorite, I think. Our cardinals are very skitterish, too. So much so that I can't even get a photo of them! :( We had a chickadee at the feeder today, and I hear the jays but haven't seen them yet. For once I'm looking forward to the leaves coming off the trees so I can see the birds better. Never thought I'd say that! LOL!
