(NO squirrel today...sorry!)
We drove to Henderson yesterday because we thought the sun was going to shine, but by the time we got there the clouds were back. While driving down one gravel road we began to see a lot of blackbirds in the air.
This tree is dotted with a swarm of them, but I really took it more for the clouds behind.
Here a swarm was taking off as I shot.
We went down a road by the Ohio River we had never been on and a long "belt" of blackbirds landed on the road infront of us. It appears to be a mixture of Starlings and Grackles.
They would make a line across the road.......then swarm back into the air....then come down again in a line a bit further on. 1000's of them! I took a couple videos that show the action better. One for the air and one for the ground.

This is so unusual for me to see Mary as we do not have swarms like this here. It is quite amazing.
Joan: Really makes you feel like you are watching Hitchcock's "The Birds".
Fascinating.I have seen several swarms like this as well.This is obviously best done in video,which I have not tried. Thanks.

They always look to be orchestrated - like the birds know which direction to go in. And it always fascinates and thrills me to see them doing their dance. Wonderful, Mary!
That is a lot of birds, we ran into some as well and the thought of the movie Birds comes to mind
Mercy Me, Mary... That's a HUGE GAB of birds.... I've seen Starlings in a big group ---but never THAT many. Did it remind you of the movie, "The Birds"???? ha ha
We're heading home today--but then I leave again on Tuesday for my Girls' Week with childhood friends. We're going to Maggie Valley. It will be fun---but I'm 'tarred' of all of this traveling... ha
They also say that we may have gotten frost at home last night. Hope the Roses/flowers are okay... Gads!!!!

I liked your videos of the blackbirds. It's amazing to see them in large flocks like that. I like to see how they all seem to know to turn in unison.
Wow!!! That was something Mary. Never seen anything like that in my life. I'm surprised they don't crash into one another there are so many. By the way I really enjoyed your Mushroom shots...they were fantastic!! Such a lovely variety.
Ruth: It seems to be the time of year for large swarms...especially in the late afternoon.
Annie: Several people commented on the way they seem to know when to turn and not running into each other. It's like they move as one.
