Green Heron......

The last time I went to the wetlands, I was fortunate to see this Green Heron land on top of one of the dead trees in the swamp.

He sat there for quite awhile letting me take lots of pictures.

At one point he stretched up his head and opened his bill really wide....

......looking like he was "yapping" about something.....

.....or maybe singing a song?? I didn't actually hear any sound come from him, but I'm hard of hearing, so who knows? But it sure looked funny!

Behind him the whole time there were 3-5 birds sitting in this other tree just watching him.

I never figured out what type of birds they were, but they kept their eyes on the heron the whole time it was there.

As I left the same heron or a different one was along the far side of the lake. It looks so much smaller on the ground.

Nice encounter. The Green Heron is one of my favorites.
The other birds look pretty much like Blackbirds or Grackles.
Great Post from you today! :)
Cheers, Klaus

What a funny looking bird ... when it extends its neck and opens its mouth up wide!!!

Klaus: Thanks! I wasn't very close, but he just sat there on that post and didn't seem to mind me being in the area. I like all herons and water birds. Maybe because I'm inland and don't see as many :-)

Cicero: I've never seen one act like that before...it was strange for sure!

WOW! Those are beautiful pictures of the Green Heron! They are so difficult to photograph, and this one really performed. The one with the color is stunning.

Wow! Very cool pictures! I love Green Herons and don't see them often enough. I did see one yesterday in the top of a dead tree, but it was about half mile away, so no pictures. Your pictures show such nice poses.

That Green Heron sure has a long neck! Great pictures. The only time I was ever saw one was in the Florida Everglades and it was down below and I was on a bridge above and it didn't display its long neck at all. So nice to see its long neck feature in your photos.

Joan and Rose: Thanks! It was a very funny bird. I'd never seen one act like that.

Sandpiper and Helen: I was fortunate that he didn't seem to mind me being fairly close to the tree he was on. Several other people walked past me and I pointed him out to them.

Ann: The other times that I've seen one, it didn't stretch its neck, so this was a first for me. Usually they look more like that last shot....just a small dark bird standing at the edge of the lake.
