Discovery....

The last few days made me think of the word "discovery"....Yesterday morning, this black butterfly discovered my flowers on the front porch!

....and so did this yellow one!

The goldfinches have discovered the sunflowers and are trying to peck out the seeds.....

.....with a few balance problems!

I discovered a new park with a new pond to explore Thursday and found this little white butterfly in the clover.....

....and a new dragonfly! It is funny because if Klaus (kjpweb )hadn't suggested Halloween Pennant for a similar dragonfly that I posted last week, I would not have known where to discover the name for this one! Thanks, Klaus! You must have been seeing my future!

I do believe it is the Halloween Pennant and it really loved the tall sticks and grasses at the ponds edge.

I also discovered a Slaty Skimmer there and got a better photo of it than my only other encounter with this one.

I discovered this bird....a Kingbird, I think?.....posing by the pond at the arboretum when I went back to look for butterflies.

I discovered that whoever said: "Necessity is the mother of invention" was correct! When I accidently broke the bee guard on this little hummingbird feeder and couldn't find a replacement for either the guard or feeder, I "discovered" a new way to hang it! Seems to work for the moment! Last night I finally found another one like it. It's a very small feeder designed to stick in a hanging basket and I really love it and so do the hummers. I bought 2 more!

The hummers also discovered my new hummingbird feeder.....bought while searching for a little bee guard or a new little feeder. Seems to have been accepted!

The male Ruby-Throat has discovered my feeders and now sits and guards them all for himself....greedy little thing!

Thursday night at dusk, 10 geese discovered our pond and decided to spend the night there!

I discovered this blue damselfly down by the Wabash River in New Harmony where the water has finally gone down.....leaving a lot of mud behind. (Blue-Fronted Dancer....thanks Tom)

The first two photos are beautiful Swallowtails, Mary!! And I've never seen a Hallowe'en Pennant before, what an amazing looking colour. Discovery has to be your middle name!
Great hummingbirds too!

Ann: Thanks! Those Swallowtails were right outside the door and pretty cooperative. The HP was new to me, too. The hummingbirds are settling in, so hope to have better shots eventually.

Eve: Can't beat Nature!

Mary- You have really gotten into dragons and damsels, and your pictures are excellent. The blue riverine damsel that you have photographed is a blue-fronted dancer. They are one of the most common damsels along the rivers in Ohio, and I'm sure where you are as well. Look out for the powdered dancer and American rubyspots in similar habitats.

Grin! Oh yes - I'm clairvoyant. I can say with some certainty that to morrow will be Sunday! That's all I got..;)
Wonderful shots - you sure discovered a lot.
The Black Swallowtail is - (no kidding) a Black Swallowtail! The yellow (my absolute favorite) an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
And the white - a Checkered White.
Great loot!
Keep 'em coming!
Cheers, Klaus

You are so lucky to have Butterflies. I still can't see very many.
I love the Dragonflies, and Damselfiies too. That bird is an Eastern Kingbird. There was a nest hanging way out over the water on the Creek of them, but all the babies have flegged, and must have left the area.

I usually find butterflies in repose in mud spots or on fresh cow poop ... hardly ever on flowers! You have very cooperative butterflies.

What a wonderful post! I just got in from a swim meet, took a tiny little nap, and sat down to see what's going on, and had this treat. Thanks!

Mike: Thanks! As long as they hold still, I can photograph them :-)

Tom: Thanks for the damsel ID. I just sort of give up on them.....more confusing then dragons. It's nice to get help from other bloggers.

Klaus: Wow...that's really clairvoyant! You're good at this :-) Thanks for the help and kind words.

Becky: I thought it was an Eastern Kingbird, but never see the red bit on the head that it shows in the guidebook. Maybe your butterflies are just slow this year like my hummers were. It was nice to see some that weren't torn up.

Cicero: LOL! Actually, mud and cow poop should make the butterflies look beautiful in contrast :-)

Helen: Thanks and I hope your grandsons won at the swim meet!

Sandy: Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Roy: Thanks! Like I said to Mike...as long as they sit still..

Just beautiful! Love your butterflies. I've seen exactly 1 (one) butterfly this entire year - a monarch last week on my roses.

Discovery...possibly one of my favorite words!

Annie: My butterflies have just begun to show up and I've only seen those 2 here at my house.

What a wonderful voyage of discovery Mary. There are so many beautiful pictures here, I cannot choose a favorite today. The butterflies love the Lantana. Luckily we have a lot of it here too so I go and sit by a bush and they all flutter around it giving me a great opportunity to take some pictures. :)
