...the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak showed up yesterday! Yeah!
So far he has only landed on this feeder that is furthest from the house, so I'm not getting real good photos. I hope he will move up to the feeders closer to the house.
They are so beautiful I'm always glad to see them arrive.
He's looking a little lopsided here.
I feel a few of the home birds deserve some photos for a change. My lovely Cardinals can always be counted on to be there every day.
Another visitor. Can you tell who it is? I was standing on the front step and he landed about 3 feet from me. I was lucky to even sneak the camera up to my eye and click....didn't get the distance altered....before he realized I was there and took off again. The Catbird....a spring visitor.
Today I saw both chickadees going in and out one right after the other. Does that mean the babies have hatched and they are both collecting food? Usually the only shot I get is when they are coming back out.....
....not a great shot, but he took off so quickly that by the time I clicked he was already in flight!
Goldfinch looking very yellow now.
Another returning visitor! The Hummingbirds are back already! I was not in a good position for this shot, but was happy to have a first shot of one. A Ruby-Throated male. This is the only hummingbird species that I see here in Indiana.
Must have been a red day....the Red-Bellied Woodpecker on the oak tree.
"I think you need to put more seeds in here...please!"

Hmmmm....that spot under the wing needed a bit of attention. Birds are so flexible!Enough for today.

What a great variety! I've never had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak or a Catbird in my yard...yeah, for you! I did just see a Rose-breasted at the nature center on Saturday and he was lovely. And your hummingbird! A great shot of his ruby throat! Rick thought he heard one in the backyard yesterday. I'm going to watch and listen extra close before heading in to work.
The Grosbeaks are my favorite! I hope they come a little closer to you! And how sweet to see that chickadee coming out of that gourd - just the perfect sized house for him!
We've been having unseasonably warm weather the last few days and I love it. The birds are really out in force but less are coming to the feeder, more natural food available I guess.
Kelly: I hope you get a Rose-Breased Grosbeak...they are so cool! They come through here every spring and stick around for several months, if I'm lucky. They haven't been as friendly since my dogwood tree died that the feeders hang on. They want more cover to hide in. I didn't expect the hummers so early, but rushed and got some feeders up.
Shelley:Chickadees are a favorite of mine. I'm just dying to look inside the gourd, but it is too high to do that without a ladder, so I just try to watch a while each day and see what sort of activity is going on there.
John: Yeah, for unseasonal weather! I know you are dying to get out in that kayak more and get some good shots in the wild.
What a great variety of birds this morning. We had one Rose Breasted Grosbeak the other day but he was too fast for us to get a picture. Maybe another day.
That Grosbeak is really lovely Mary. I hope it does mean the babies are hatching. :)

Lovely! Haven't seen RD grosbeaks here in quite a while. And I'm amazed you could even spot that hummer!

Rose: Thanks...it was a good day and the weather is getting very nice.
Annie: I think I saw the hummer land, or I might not have spotted it. I was sitting off to the side in the opening of the garage where I watch the Chickadees from. I hope to have much better shots later from inside the house.

It is a delight to see all your birds! The Baltimore Orioles came into my backyard last week. I am waiting for the Grosbeaks and the Hummers. I often will have Cat birds nesting.

You get so many great birds in your garden. You're giving them what they want. Food and specially water. It's always a thrill for me to see your American birds. I'll hope to get over to the USA again soon. I've not been for three years now!
Glad you have some Grosbeaks now, Mary. Ours are still here I think... They've been regular visitors to my feeders since last Wednesday.
Have you seen the female Grosbeaks yet???? They are also coming to our feeders and look like huge Sparrows---with a big white eyebrow and that huge beak!!!! Beautiful birds.
I haven't seen a Catbird--but have seen a Cowbird on ocacsion (no picture though).

Jenny: If you come to the US, I wish you would visit Indiana! We don't seem to attract a lot of tourists, but I hope that I've shown that it is a really nice place actually :-) We have more then the Indy 500 and basketball here.
Betsy: I haven't seen the female Grosbeak yet this year, but I have a photo of one on the sidebar from a privious year. I would cheerfully send you my Cowbirds to photograph...they don't seem to want to go away this year.

You had a good day didn't you? I haven't seen the Grosbeaks et, BUT the male Oriole was here this morning, and I wasn't prepared. NO grape jelly. I'd better get to the store tomorrow, and I think I need to get the Hummingbird feeder out too.

You got great pictures of your visitors. We're enjoying the grosbeaks but haven't seen any hummingbirds yet.
Such great shots. I hear my birds and occasionally see them through the sliding glass door. I've seen them gathering things for nesting from an old nest that was on the garage. But they always disappear before I can grab a camera.
