The usual logs full of turtles. We were trying to figure out what the problem is with the big turtle on the right.....dented shell? deformed shell?

Turtles everywhere!
I spotted this little snake in the water and he very nicely hung around and posed for me. I don't know types of snakes, so I'll just say he is a water snake!

OK....."eagle eye" Mike spotted this one. Do you see a frog here??????
Can you see it now? He couldn't have been more than a half inch long!

Can you see it now? He couldn't have been more than a half inch long!It is pretty obvious that Mike is "far sighted" and I am "near sighted".

Believe it or not I did spot it before I enlarged it but I wouldn't have if you had not pointed it out.
I always smile at all your turtles...when I first found your blog I would count the number I seen in each photo.

Your serpent looks like a northern water snake to me. They are fairly common around inland waterways in the midwest. Here in Ohio, they are often mistaken for cottonmouths, but we don't have any poisonous watersnakes in Ohio.
As far as the turtle goes, it looks like it has recovered from a very serious problem. It may have been hit by a car, but really, anything could have happened to it.
I often see turtles with mangled shells, but not quite this bad. It is amazing what a licking turtles can take and recover from.

Rose: You have eagle eyes like Mike! I'm always amazed at the turtle numbers, too...you would think they would run into each other all the time :-) I remember that I had a header shot with a long log full...that must have been when you found my blog.
Tom: Thanks for the help. I had looked up water snakes but couldn't tell if that was a northern water snake or not. I knew it was harmless and it wasn't very big. We have cottonmouths in Indiana, but I have never seen one and hope that I never do. I bet you are right about the turtle being hit by a car. I have never seen one dented up like that before, but I do see them crossing the road and can imagine they get hit a lot.

Hi Mary, I'm home from Texas!!! And--it sounds like you are leaving for that wonderful Quilt Show. I have a great friend in Colorado who attends lots of quilt shows and LOVES them. I'm sure you will have a great time.
We had a nice trip to Texas and enjoyed being with one of my sons and family. However, the weather was HORRIBLE... Glad to be home!

Just love looking at all your turtles neatly lined up on logs enjoying the sun and each others' company. Snake, huh? Well you see, I have this Indiana Jones hat I like to wear, and I suppose a distrust of snakes to go along with that ... The nicely camouflaged frog is cool.
Mr. Dent seems non the worse for wear.
