Well, we had a bit of sunshine yesterday, so we headed to Henderson to check the eagle.
We immediately spotted him on top of a tree watching the nest, but what he is doing in this photo, I'm not sure.....stretching his wings???
He sat in this tree for quite a while and then suddenly took off for a different tree nearby with several small birds chasing along with him.
Here he is on the new tree with a little bird standing "guard" up on top! I'd say that is a brave little bird. Never could tell what it was.
Mrs. Eagle is still sitting like a queen in the middle of the Heron rookery.

Today there were Coots down below.....all those little "butts" sticking in the air around the Canada Goose.

After the male eagle took off out of sight, we drove next door to Audubon State park. I will have to get photos inside the museum some day, but today we just did a drive through of the park.
I found 3 more wildflowers, but don't know the name of the first two. I love these little blue ones. ( I just found a name for these....Blue-Eyed Marys!....no wonder I like them :-)
Scattered among them were taller dark purple flowers.
The mixture of the two was really pretty.
I couldn't believe that Mike spotted these Jack-in-the-Pulpits while driving along! He has such eagle eyes!
This is the outside of the museum and a bit of the lovely pink dogwood on the right of the photo.

Thank you for calling in at my blog. Your squirrel star is indeed just that! It never ceases to amaze me what different birds you have from the ones we have here ... our robins, for instance, look completely different. Your blog is so beautiful in all its Spring splendor!
How wonderful that you can go to check up and see their progress Mary. What you need now is a long ladder to climb into the tree next to it so we can get pics of the chicks when they hatch. :)
Wonderful photos of the eagle!! I had to chuckle at the little bird perched so precariously at the upper top of the branch! Brave indeed!

Coastcard: I always marvel at your birds, too. I like your English robins and many of the little tits.
Joan: I do wish I had stronger binoculars and a way to take photos through them. It would take a very long ladder to reach that nest....and a boat. Those trees are in the middle of a watery area about 100 yards or more from where I take photos. I assume the isolation is the reason for all the nesting activity going on. I think the eagle would get very upset if we were closer:-) I'll just have to watch from afar and take what I can get of photos.
Michele: That little bird had helped chase the eagle to the tree and he was not going to leave. He probably was crying out to all the other birds to tell them the eagle was there. I would guess it was a red-wing blackbird, but don't know for sure...too far away.
Ruth: Jack-in-the-pulpit or very unusual and I always enjoy seeing them.
I have often seen small birds dogging eagles or large hawks. I've wondered what was up about that.
The jack-in-the-pulpits blooms are reminiscent of the skunk cabbage we saw in boggy spots int he foothills this weekend. I wonder if they are related. The leaves are totally different, though.

Those little blue flowers are lovely: I have misplaced my good book on wildflowers. Been kind of keeping my eye out for it since we were to the woods the other day.
And oh, I love the looks of that museum
Katney: I have no idea on the skunk cabbage and jack in the pulpit plants. I was surprised to see the little birds bothering the eagle. He was just sitting in a tree watching the nest and minding his own business.
Fishing Guy: It would be wonderful to see him closer, but better for him to be far and stay around.

I didn't know those smaller birds chased Eagles, but I've seen them here too. I found a big nest today, but don't know what is in it. I'll post it Saturday.

What a great day out with the camera. Loved the tour. When you mentioned the small birds around the eagle, when I was taking one of the hawk there was a little one that kept messing with it but I couldn't click fast enough to catch it. I'm glad you captured the small one near yours.
