After posting for 3 days about Illinois, it is time to catch up with the birds in my yard.
The Mourning Dove came strutting across the front walk yesterday.
This little male downy was on the silver maple.
A female joined him, but I think he chased her away.
I hung this basket of suet on the pole to try to keep varmints from getting it. The first day the Downy tried to land on the pole and slid down.....moved up....slid down....finally managed to get the cage in his grip. Then he started approaching by landing on one of the hanging feeders first and jumping over. I finally took pity on him and put a stick through the bottom of the cage so he could land easily.
This little Chipping Sparrow is having a few troubles, too! A little bit too far to reach easily!
I believe he is making his displeasure known to me....nothing I can do about that feeder...sorry!
OK....the ground works better.
I don't see the chickadee go in or out very often, but try to watch a little each day to see if they are still in residence. Coming out is always easier to photograph then coming in.
I believe this cardinal knows that the Silver Maple is a good hiding place right now....he blends in very nicely.
However....no where is a good hiding place when you are bright blue!
The violet patch under the feeders is a very popular spot right now.
Even the male House Sparrow looks good surrounded by violets.
The doves enjoying the late afternoon sun near the violets.
"I'm not sleeping....I'm just resting my eyes!"
Hmmmm....when the grass is "Cardinal high", I think it is time to mow! I knew there had to be a downside to spring somewhere.

Love the post but I just can't get over the GREEN!!! We have a big snow storm coming tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!
Anne: It is always interesting to compare your birds wtih ours.
Eve: It's very "spring" here....but cold today and we still have to hope we don't get a late frost until probably the first of May....so don't send any of your snow here, please.
It's nice to see your doves let you get fairly close to them. The ones that come around my yard are extremely skittish.

Loved that photo of the chipping sparrow doing the splits to access the seeds in that feeder! And that chickadee looked so cute popping out of that gourd!
A lovely selection Mary. Spring is on the way and you are going to have so many birds to photograph soon, you will not know which to pick and choose. :)
Oh I love the 'home birds' Mary... I haven't seen any Chipping Sparrows around here. They are so pretty...We do have Mourning Doves --and just yesterday and today, they are becoming brave enough to come up on the deck...

John: My doves will get fairly close without flying up into a tree. Of course I take a lot of photos through the windows.
Ruth: I'll mow rather then shovel any day! We had flurries earlier.
Shelly: I've seen a couple other smaller birds struggle with that feeder. Not sure who it is designed for!

Betsy: I'm praying you don't get the snow, because if you do, we probably will also! We had flurries this morning, but nothing sticking at this point.
Annie: Probably not. We are well below Chicago and the snow usually stops at Indianapolis or that area. We may get a freeze and a few more flurries. I hope nothing more than what was flying out there this morning. I never feel really safe until May 1st.
What great variety. You definitely have a bird friendly yard. I'm jealous. :-) I keep saying I'm going to work on mine but still haven't done it.
...a great variety of birds. Our Chipping Sparrows have just returned for the summer. They are always so much fun.

I think mowing is the ONLY downside to spring. Enjoyed the backyard activities.

I'd like to see some green grass here... You have a lot of beautiful birds coming to your yard. I love the two downies on the maple tree.

Kelly: I don't see them alot, so it was nice to have a pair out there.
Don: He was pretty funny...couldn't figure out why this skinny "tree" didn't have any bark.
Leedra: I agree! We are getting our late freeze at the moment. Brrrr.
April: I'm worried about this cold weather we have right now and hope it doesn't do too much damage to all the blooming stuff.
I'm glad you shared your visitors with us. I'll bet they missed you while you were gone. I hope they're able to keep warm for the next couple of days.

Mary: We do seem to have the same birds in the area. I really like the dove close-up, they are a neat bird when you look closely.
