Most of these photos are from Thursday when it was dry, but we did get some rain yesterday...finally!
This pretty young female Cardinal was picking around at the flowers on the vine that covers my dead tree.

My woodpeckers have started showing up again at the suet. Here the Hairy woodpecker is eyeing that same suet cake the sparrow was trying to reach.
Besides his size....the Hairy is larger than the suet cage....its tail is much plainer then the Downy. Pure white with no bars.
One of the Downy woodpeckers....basically identical to the Hairy except the size, shorter bill, and bars on tail.

This one decided the best way to reach the suet might be from underneath rather then in the upright position.
This one looked very funny sitting on the edge of this dish.....
He noticed that I had crumbled some orange dough suet into the dish and really wanted to get some of it!
This Goldfinch female just sat real quietly on this limb. I wondered if it was a young one.
The Chickadees are starting to come around more....especially to the ant guards to get a drink. They think it is their own private drinking cup and prefer it to the fountain.
"Could I share with you? I don't eat much!"
And Friday it rained.....
....a puddle! I haven't seen a puddle in our driveway for months!
Should I be insulted that the House Sparrows like the puddles to bathe in just as much as my fountain??? I guess its like the difference between swimming in the ocean or swimming in a pool.
The Goldfinches are beginning to molt....a sure sign of fall! Between molting and being very wet, this one looked really scroungy! The white wing bars weren't showing on any of the males and that made their wings look so black and "odd".

Great pictures, Mary... I have seen ONE Hairy at my feeders --but he didn't come back --or at least, I didn't see him. I didn't know about their tails --so thanks for sharing... I just knew he was much larger with a much longer beak.
Glad you got some rain.. We are getting some this morning also.
I've been reading posts and watching 9/11 videos this morning. Makes me cry. Let's NEVER forget.

Hi Mary...I'm seeing more birds in the back yard in the last few days then I have since mid july!!
My one consistent has been my Pheobe!!
I think the migration is on and the winter birds are showing up to!!

That goldfinch is starting to look a little pathetic compared to their normal attire.
It is interesting to learn how to tell the different ones apart Mary. I always like learning something new.
Maybe for them the rain puddle is like going to a spa? LOL!!
Roy: I love woodpeckers and am always happy to see them out there.
Betsy: I usually have trouble telling the Hairy and Downy apart, even though the size is suppose to be the big key, the angle they are at doesn't always make it easy to tell the size.
Grammie G: I've missed the bird activity and am glad they are starting to come back more.
Dorothy: Cardinals really look bad when they molt. Always glad to see them get nice and red again.
Ruth: We still need lots of rain. We haven't had a good soaking one yet.
Rose: They do look pathetic at the moment....being wet doesn't help.
Joan:Yes, my sparrows are "taking the waters" and having a good mud bath :-) Don't even have to pay for it!

Mary your female Cardinal looks a little like our Mouse Birds but both female and male look the same your Male is a fantastic red :))
Phillip: Our woodpeckers will come anywhere you put suet :-) It's fairly easy to attract them if you have any trees around and a suet feeder of some sort. Mine are pretty faithful...especially in the winter. Haven't heard of a Mouse Bird....will have to look that one up!
Philip: They do look a lot a like! Especially like the young cardinal that doesn't have a red beak yet.
