I made two trips to the wetlands today....it was a nice day :-)
The first time I was there, while I was watching some Killdeer in the marsh area, I saw an odd dove. I have never seen one of these before.
My bird book shows two possibilities....the Eurasian Collared-Dove or the Ringed Turtle-Dove. Anyone know for sure?? Or is it just a white Feral Pigeon (Rock Dove)?
The neck mark is pretty distinct, whatever it is.

I didn't get very many photos of it. It is larger than a Mourning Dove...there was one nearby.
Rather pretty....but the camera didn't like all that "white", so the photos aren't the best.
Here it is in a tree getting ready to move.....not a great shot...too far away, but it flared its tail.

Beautiful bird, Mary... I don't know what he is for sure but he is very pretty... Keep us posted if you find out for sure.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the identification of this dove. But it definitely is different form the mourning doves we have around here.
I'm going for a Eurasian Collared-Dove which is a great find on your part considering their range and where you are! Nice catch Mary!
I'm going with Renee's answer. We had some of those a few years ago and a neighbor talked with someone from the local college and he gave that same answer. They are beautiful.
Hi Mary, yes it's a Eurasian Collared Dove. They invaded Europe from the South East over the last 20- 30 years and are now very common. Very recently they have started colonising the USA. I know they have them in Florida and Iowa for sure and probably many other States including yours now!
I'm glad that all of you know what it is for sure. It was a new bird for me. If we have them here, it is the first one that I've spotted. Rather pretty, but I did see that it is suppose to be invasive. I think there was another one in that tree.

Well done Mary that was a nice find of the Collared Doves. They are so common over here now.

Now you see Mary we have the same Dove here and we call it the "Ringed Turtle-Dove" I guess it's were you are on the Planet, still great shots :)
Well, whatever it is I have not seen one that I know of. I see the majority think it is the Eurasion one...
The two species are very similar, but the ring-necked turtle dove is smaller by a couple of inches and paler. Also it's not nearly as wide spread and does poorly in the wild, being a domestic bird, although there are some colonies in Florida and Louisiana. Most found are escapees as pets rather than introduced from Europe like the collard dove. The ring-necked are streptopelia risoria and the more common Eurasian collared dove is streptopelia decaoto.
The Sibleys certainly shows the Eurasian as more likely to be seen in my area. I always laugh when they give measurements.....like I can get out there with a ruler?? I'm not that good at eyeballing size. I can tell it was larger than the Mourning Dove.
