Today's post stars are a couple of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds.
We went to Mike's parent's house to wish his mother a "Happy Birthday" and they showed me the young hummingbird that has been visiting their feeder.
I had to shoot through the front window, but otherwise, it didn't mind me watching it. They taped a stick to the bottom of their feeder, so it can rest. It was really guarding this feeder and never moved very far from it!
Starting to get spotty looking in the throat area.
Opening its bill...the tongue is just barely sticking out.
At home, I have been "stalking" this male that has taken over my feeders.
I finally caught him with some sunlight on the red throat...what a difference the sun makes!
I don't see very many males....usually the female is guarding my feeders. There was a lot of chasing going on, so I don't think she is happy to have him taking over "her" feeder!
I have two feeders, but apparently they are too close together. I need to move one to the other side of the house.
The male feeding....he looks so dark when the sun doesn't light up his throat!
I sat out on the front step waiting patiently for him to get used to my presence and finally he decided it was safe to sit in the tree that the feeder is hanging from and on a nice handy branch that I could aim the camera at!
I couldn't resist taking lots of photos, but he didn't change position much.
I have a lot of shots with the eyes closed....resting? worn out from defending the feeder?

I have a lot of shots with the eyes closed....resting? worn out from defending the feeder? They are so fragile looking you wonder how they ever survive. It will be interesting to see how long they stick around. We have fairly mild falls.

these are some incredible pics. I wish i were so lucky to capture shots like this. separating the feeders might be a good idea since the male is dominating the feeder. hope all is well. have a great night.
what do you put in the feeders Mary, must be other than plain water?
They do look wonderful if the sun catches them just right else they can look so dull. Lovely pics Mary.
Beautiful shots,especially the ones where the red of the throat shows up.These are sure feisty little birds,but such fun to watch.

Naquillity: If you have hummers where you live, you can usually see where they like to sit. They tend to stay near the feeder. Then you can sit or stand somewhere nearby and wait for them. They will come pretty close to you once they get used to your presence.
Tony: I buy a commercial powder that you add to water. You can make your own mixture from water and sugar and a drop of color if you want it red....they like red flowers.
Joan: My feeder is where it is hard to get them with the sun on their throat, but when the sun hits them they sure shine!
Ruth: I like watching them sit more than anything. They are just such fascinating little birds.

I like the one with his eyes shut...I don't think people think they ever sit still!!
They sit on a clothes line I have right near the feeder and mostly I have males fighting over the feeder.
I use only the 1 cup sugar to 4 cup water (boiled) no color added!!
I know I've said this before Mary, but I dearly wish we had hummers over here! Hours of fun!

My hummers are still here, and every day I say I'm going to take close-up pictures, but haven't yet.

These are wonderful pictures of the hummingbirds. I especially like the one with the red highlighted and the one with the mail feeding. You did a great job on these.
Hi Mary. How cool to be able to get close to these beautiful birds.
I love the hummingbirds and like taking photos of them. I just wish they were less territorial and didn't fight so much! They are constantly chasing each other making it hard to get focused before they take off again.
