Just when I thought the butterflies were beginning to disappear for the year, I spotted a new one while we were at the arboretum today! Of course I didn't realize I had seen anything new until I got home and looked at it on the computer :-)
This is a Red-banded Hairstreak
This is a Red-banded HairstreakIt's a good thing that I'm such a fanatic at constantly clicking my camera at ANYTHING that moves, because I wasn't even going to take a photo when I first saw it. I thought it was a Gray Hairstreak...only it seemed smaller, the same size as the Eastern Tailed Blues.
I'm glad I took a few photos when I got home and saw the difference between it and the Grey Hairstreak below. This one has that orange band and no orange on the spots by the tail!
Gray Hairstreak.....slightly larger, orange spots, no wide orange band.
Moth or butterfly? I have a lot of trouble deciding that about some of the little "critters" that we see. This is a perfect example of one that I have no idea.....moth?
This was another one.....butterfly or moth? These drove me NUTS! There were a half dozen or more flying around, but you can see that they almost always land UNDER the flower! I'm too old....and bad knees...to get down and lay on the ground hoping for a better shot...sorry!
I leaned down as far as I could. (Glad nobody but Mike was around to watch me) It has a pretty pattern, but likes hanging under the flowers.
This was the only one I saw that sort of got on top of the flower!
We were hunting for Monarch caterpillars and found a couple.
One we saw was very small, but I didn't get a good photo of it.
While I was talking with Mr. Hartman, Mike was taking photos in their garden. Another "butterfly party"....Pearl Crescents this time :-) There are still lots of them around.
Mike spotted these aphids....very colorful!
I liked this silhouette shot.
The Hartman's had set out a plate of rotting fruit and it seemed to be the "happening place" for a large group.....Red-Spotted Purple Admirals, Hackberry Emperors, a Viceroy, and an assortment of flies and bees/wasps.
I like this interesting bee? with the white on it.

Oh what luck!! I love the orange stripe on it which makes it look very distinctive.
From what I can see that other one is a moth Mary ..... no blobs on the end of its antennae. :)

Great find with the Red-banded Hairstreak! That's another one I haven't got yet! I agree the others are not butterflies, but boy that one looks close to some of those skippers.
Is this Arboretum a private home??? The Hartman's must be great folks.... Love seeing all of the different butterflies... And yes, I think those are some kind of moths.... Glad you had a nice visit, Mary.

Hi Mary...I always like seeing the Monarch caterpillars..I think they are so pretty !!
I also have been seeing Pearl Crescents in little party mode!! Its about time I see some kinds of butterflies,and summer is over.lol

Joan: It was rather pretty! I thought the others were moths, but they are so small, I have trouble seeing the details.

Eve: I was really surprised when I saw the photos on the computer. Those little moths can be very colorful, but I have no idea what their names are.
Betsy: Yes, this is a private property that used to be a family farm, and the Hartmans are nice enough to share it with the public once a week. Mr. Hartman is a Master Gardener and they work hard keeping it all nice. It is always a great place for butterflies.
Grammie G: There seems to be an explosion of Pearl Crescents right now! I see more of them then anything else. The swallowtails seem to have disappeared. The Monarchs are beginning to migrate through,but I haven't seen a lot.
