From around town over the weekend.....

This is an assortment of photos from several places we went this weekend. To make up for yesterday, here is my squirrel enjoying the pot of seeds I left on the ground for it. I hope it is the injured squirrel and not one of the others. I only seem to have a couple squirrels right now. I don't know where all the others went.
This male Goldfinch is just about completely changed to summer colors.

The Chipping Sparrow is coming regularly and is pretty "tame" compared to many of the other birds. It will feed in the drive a few feet from where I am sitting and act like I am not there. I guess I should reward it with some seeds that it might like.
We drove to Blue Grass to see how the burned out area was growing back in. It was greening up nicely, so I guess they knew what they were doing. This Meadowlark was posing in a small tree.

Plenty of Red Wing Blackbirds.
A female Red Wing Blackbird that had several males hanging about nearby.

Robin giving me its silhouette.
One of 3 Killdeer that were loudly protesting our presence.
A pair of them.
A Grackle giving me the "evil eye" through the leaves.

We drove by the house of a friend of Mike's who is suppose to have some owls that hang around....but of course they didn't show up while we were there!
However, I took a photo of one of two squirrels that was chasing around this big tree.

And one of a pair of Flickers that was also chasing around in their yard. We will have to go back another time and try for the owls again. I was really hoping to see them. They say that they sit in the trees and hoot at each other and even come down on the driveway and spread out their wings. Don't know what that means, but am dying of curiosity!

Took a couple of butterfly shots. So far I seem to just be seeing white butterflies.
This one was near the heron rookery when we stopped by to check on the herons and the eagles.

Flying in.

Life in the rookery.....
"Look, dear....we have a new neighbor!"
"Oops.....don't look now, dear, but I think he's a flasher!"

"I brought you that stick you asked for....."
"What do you mean 'it's the wrong color'!!!!!"
Nesting news:
We haven't seen the eagles on the last two visits and I'm wondering if the nest was not successful this year for some reason. Will keep checking.
On the home front, I have not seen the chickadee going in the gourd for several days. I'm beginning to suspect that it was a lone chickadee trying to attract a mate to that gourd without success. Several times I saw it sitting in the tree fluttering its wings before I quit seeing it at all. Just don't know.
We moved our bluebird nest box to a new location. Will see if anything moves in.

It looks like a wonderful weekend Mary. Such a great variety. I hope that is the same squirrel who has got better during the last few days.

...great birding! About how many nests are at your heronry? I just love visiting ours. I love hearing all the crazy prehistoric sounds too--especially after the babies hatch.

I haven't seen a summer plumage goldfinch yet this year. We don't get to many because most of the goldfinches leave before they change colors.

Great pictures, Mary.... Looks like you all had a nice weekend. Sorry about the Eagles and Chickadees... Want my chickadees???? They still seem to be winning the Nestbox battle with the Bluebirds --since the Bluebirds don't seem to be around much...

I'd love to see a Kildeer and Meadowlark...

By the way, my Red-bellied are gone (first time I can remember them not being around). Are they just mating somewhere????? Hope they come back.

Have a great day.
Hugs,
Betsy

Love the first photo Mary! Things are looking good up there but I hope the birds have better luck.

I wonder if your squirrels could have made it down here? We certainly have plenty. No bluebirds have moved into our nest box, but the chickadees are trying to take it over. It will be interesting to see what happens.

You just have the best places to take pictures Mary. I love every one of them. All your birds are so co-operative too. Love the squirrel and the flower pot.
I bought some gourd bird houses. We'll see.
