Fort Massac on the Ohio River in Illinois was originally a French fort that had been taken over by the British. However, they weren't keeping it up and George Rogers Clark was able to easily take it over during the Revolutionary War.

I thought this wall looked like it was bowing inwards. You can see where they brought logs together for the length they needed.

Where the original fort stood. I think that preserving this and then building the replica next to it was a great idea. Mike took this photo and some of the others, also. He likes the "factual", and I like the "arty" approach :-) Takes both to tell a story.

I enjoy looking and learning about old forts. Life must have been difficult for them, but then again they didn't know the comforts that we have. My old bones ache just looking at those beds.

Hi There, that fort looks just like one that George and I saw in Herrodsburg, KY... George Rogers Clark was involved with the Herrodsburg fort also... I'll try to find that post and send it to you.. VERY similar!!!

Tom, Joan, Ruth: Thanks...I think sometimes the "good old days" weren't so good!
Becky: Those old forts definitely weren't about comfort, but in those days maybe that was more comfortable then we realize now :-)
Betsy: George R. Clark was involved with many forts in this area. One of the main ones was in Vincences, IN...not that far from us. Guess I need to go check it out, too. Mike knows more about it than I do.

Are we following the same paths lately? Well, this resembles a path I followed quite a while ago. I would have dated your fort as mid-1800s like ours. It sure bears a lot of resemblance. I documented our visit to Ft. Simcoe here.
