Mouse the cat has incredibly long thick fur and she is "mean" natured and won't let anyone handle her to comb it. So, when she begins trying to shed her winter fur, she gets horrible mats of dead fur all over her back. This makes her even grumpier than normal and very stressed out. That means a trip to the vet to be knocked out so they can groom her. By the time she goes each year, it usually means a shave of the belly area to shorten the fur for the rest of the summer, the legs, all the mats on the back (which gives her a patchy look) and shortening the sides. She gets really mad at me, but she is 100 % happier once it is done! But she sure looks funny :-)

I know exactly what you mean by the patchy, matted furry look for we had a long haired cat once. Mouse is a great looking cat with a great name :-) I love the independent personality of some of these lovable creatures.
Me and My Camera: She is certainly independent minded! She was not welcomed by my other 2 cats and has had to fight since the day we got her. If she was an "only cat" she might be a lot happier. She doesn't like to be held or touched much at all and of course she is the one that needs to have things done the most!
Poor mouse - at least there's a good reason for her bad haircuts, which is more than I can say for some of mine.
Wren: I should be careful what I say about bad haircuts, since I cut my own hair and people probably think I go to a butcher :-)

Nice haircut! I'd like her stylist. I can't find one that can do anything with my hair.

My mother in law also had a cat who got terrible matted fur, who was also mean as all get-out and had to be tranquilized to have the mats cut out.
Hmmm...maybe it's the matting that makes them mean.
I do think that the matting really upsets her. Yet, she is too "dumb" to let me groom her and get rid of them before they get real bad. I have another long-haired cat who does just fine taking care of her own fur. Mouse is "mean" with or without mats....she just likes to be left alone. Her fur is so dark on top and light underneath that she looks white where they shave her! Once the back part begins to grow again, the belly and legs don't look bad and are much more comfortable for her in the heat.
Oh no! Poor Mouse. I bet a hiding place would be in order right now!

JB: I knew Jelly Bean would understand. When Mouse came home she hid in the corner of the living room for a while, before deciding to ignore what she couldn't do anything about....or admiting that it feels a lot better :-)
