Took a late afternoon drive to Blue Grass and saw a new bird. Not positive what it is.
We think it is a female Merlin, unless someone who knows more can give a better guess. It looked at lot like a Kestrel only larger and with only one faint face mark.
I'm always excited to see a new bird and I've never seen a Merlin, so I hope that is what it is!

Oh, good! That is my first new bird for 2011. Always exciting to see a new one! Will have to go back and see if it is hanging around that area.
I don't know what this bird is, but it is a majestic creature and you got some wonderful pictures.

Don: The biggest difference between it and a Kestrel is that the Kestrel will fly away the minute you stop, but this bird sat still and posed. My kind of bird :-)
I was going to guess kestrel...now I have to go look up a merlin. I've never even heard of that bird!
I would say that is an immature Merlin Mary. Great find! Looks like they winter along the east coast. I have a feeling a bird group would be very interested in your find. Do you have a local group in your area? If you send them the info and picture I bet they would be thrilled.
Annie: it does look a lot like a kestrel only bigger and only one mark on the face.
Eve: I'm not sure...It is a Fish and Wildflife Area and they may have a site. Will look.
