I don't particularly like Starlings, but I had fun watching them at the fountain yesterday.
"Come on, Larry....we double dog dare you to get in!"
"I can't believe that idiot is doing it in this weather!"
"Ha.....the jokes on you....she put a heater in this thing! Feels better than the outside air!"
"I am NOT drinking that water after he's been bathing in it!"
"I know he's your cousin, but I think he's always been a bit crazy!"
The Mockingbird was less enthusiastic about the weather or the fountain.
Very fluffed up against the cold :-)

What an intent stare! He knows what he wants.
This windblown shot was my favorite. That's why it ended up in the header. I'm always making new headers....3-4 at a time and half of them never make it to the top of my blog!

Hi Mary, you're right, starlings are fun to watch. Great pictures of them and the mockingbird, and your commentary made me smile.
I guess I consider myself lucky not to have any starlings much around here... I see one occasionally... I don't have any mockers at my feeders either.. BUT--I did have a cute little Junco this morning.

Such cute starlings and your funny captions made me laugh! :) Do you really have a heater in a fountain? Are there any other birds besides starlings who appreciate warm water?

Denise: Thanks..I like watching the all...even the starlings.
Betsy: You are lucky. I only get a bunch of starlings if the fields are full of snow...like now. And I only have maybe a dozen plus some cowbirds.

Aluajala: I removed the actual fountain part of this unit...the frog ball that is usually there... and we dropped a birdbath heating unit in to keep it from freezing. The birds really appreciate it when the ponds and such are frozen. I see many of them drinking from it. The Starlings are the first I have seen get in the water...it's too deep for most birds and they had to flutter the whole time.

Well I love the new header Mary! I really need to get a heated birdbath. Sadly I left my terra cotta one out with water in it and well...it's not going to be a birdbath any more. CRACK! I'm not very good at taking care of my summer pots!

George: Thanks. I guess birds need to wash occasionaly even in winter. Brrrrrr
Arija: I was suprised it got in because the water is so deep. I left if for drinking mostly.

Eve: I broke a terra cotta one, too that was much shallower, so this year I tried this so they could at least drink.
