It's been a week for interesting hawk encounters. We had been searching for hawks out around Blue Grass and were finally heading home.
This Red-tailed Hawk was sitting on a pole along a busy road. Mike turned the car around and pulled into a church parking lot so I could get a photo.
I had taken a few photos and we were about to leave when he suddenly dove to the roadside where we were......nearly hitting a semi truck that was driving by at the time.
We knew he had nailed something.
Picking it up.
A very large mouse or something of that sort.
Gulping it down
His neck looks reather "bulging" there.
He swooped off to another pole top where he then regurgetated it and went to work on it.

When he dove with such fierce concentration across the road....with his eye on the prize....I couldn't help but wonder how many get hit by big trucks. This was a narrow busy road and semis were constantly passing by as well as cars. It's a hard life being a hawk in a busy city area.

Good Morning, Mary! Wow! You really got some good pictures of the hawk catching his dinner! I know that was exciting! Bless Mike's heart for stopping and letting you photograph this encounter!
Great Capture Mary. I would never think that he would swallow it and fly to a spot to eat! Cool!!
That was your good luck to be there at the right time. I can see in your one shot, that it does look like a mouse.

I didn't know they regurgitated there food, but them again I have never seen one with a mouse..mostly birds that they tear apart ...must have "hairball" problems..lol !!
Hi everyone! I think he must have just put it in his mouth as a holding measure. He wanted to get off the side of the road and back up high to safety.
Becky: We got snow last night. I just trudged out with the bird food for all the starving critters.

Hahaha....I'm just reading along...then got to your last paragraph. Yuck is right. We've had some interesting hawk encounters of late too! Great photos...loved the Red-shouldered...
That is something I didn't know about hawks! You were certainly in the right place at the right time, to get that series of photos!!
OH Mary, How neat to get that many pictures of the hawk---while he is preparing his dinner.... How special is that!!!! I know you were excited to see that... I certainly would have been.

This is a great photo sequence. I'm glad the hawk got its dinner and didn't wind up being roadkill.
