We went to Blue Grass yesterday and one of the strangest things we saw.....
....was this Great Blue Heron settled down for the night on the top of this little cedar tree.
When Mike first spotted it we were coming down the road past one of the lakes and there it was....sticking up like a sore thumb in the middle of no-where (so it seemed).
We kept creeping closer in the car hoping to not scare it away, while I tried to snap photos between the grasses at the edge of the road that kept swaying in my way.
We finally got more or less opposite it with a clear view through the grasses. The sun was really making the body look deep blue.
My favorite shot.....like a fancy urn sitting up there.

I just got a new email address...any of you that email me....and am trying to get it coordinated with my Blogs with some difficulty. Seems like I have fussed with this half of the day with help from a couple of Blogger friends who also have Gmail accounts. Not sure that I have conquered it yet.

These are wonderful pictures, which show the color of the heron very well. I also think the last photo is great.
Those are stunning, Mary! Lucky you two were able to get so close without scaring it away...not an easy feat.

An English Girl Rambles
That first shot of the Great Blue Heron atop the cedar tree is truly spectacular and my favorite of the series. Even though the bird is far off, I love how he's peacefully surveying his realm.
Pretty neat that you post to my blog on the same day that I return after a long summer absence. Hope to be around more and I look forward to enjoying more of your photos of our fine feathered friends! :-)
The last shot is great Mary these Birds are even popular here I really like their striking eye colour :)

I always love seeing herons and this one was so funny looking on that bush! We saw one other in the water, but the sun was in a bad spot and my shot was so-so.
I have never seen a heron roosting at all, let alone in a small tree like that! Thank you for brightening my day!!
