We went to Goose Pond in Linton, Indiana today and hit the jackpot!
The very first place we stopped, we could see some really big white birds in the distance, so we walked a trail headed in the general direction. We had no idea what they were.
These aren't great shots, but I'm just thrilled to have gotten anything at all.
Black wing tips.....I still didn't know that meant they were Whooping Cranes until I got home and started searching the bird book!
Lifting off. I could see in some of the photos that their legs appeared to have "stripes". After looking on the internet and seeing much better photos than mine, I know now those are the large leg bands they are marked with.

As long as they were against the ground, I could focus.
Last shot I got before they were too far away for my camera.

Those are just spectacular Mary. Once again I wish we lived closer together! I'd love to see all your birds and of course butterflies.

Wow!!! So rare.....you were so lucky! Of course, you had a great eye to spot them. I've never seen one in the wild. I would LOVE to!
Congrats, Mary.... That had to have been so special---just to see those Whooping Cranes.... WOW!!!!!! I would have been shaking so much that my pictures would have been fuzzy.... ha ha

Congratulations on seeing these cranes and getting the pictures. Most of us will only see Whooping Cranes through pictures.
Quite a present Mary! Now there is a bird I havent seen yet either. Very good for you!!! What a wonderful way to document this beautiful bird!
