I'm so glad this little Red-breasted Nuthatch has decided to "winter" at my house! Actually I have seen two of them! According to the bird guide maps I will only have them for the winter.
They are smaller than the White-breasted....only 4.5" long. The belly of the female is pale, so I'm assuming this is a female.
I love the dramatic eye stripes!
It has been coming most mornings to eat some suet.
Very cute little bird.
I like the way it looks from the back with those eye stripes lining the head.
Oops....I think she sees me.

Hi Mary..yesterday I went out walking in the woods with my new snowshoes...it was beautiful and the the Nuthatches where everywhere picking away at the trees and making that cute little chatter they do..they are pretty comical too!!
Your little friend is a cutie and is fun to watch, I'm sure they will stick around as long as you keep the suet coming..: }

These guys overwinter by us and are here all summer too. Usually they are in and out at the feeders but on really cold days I've seen one hunkered down on the window feeders.

I have to admit, I love the RB Nuthatch more than any bird at my feeders! They are cute, efficient and have a little attitude to boot. :)
Renee: He needs some attitude with the pushy birds like the Blue Jays and House Sparrows and a few others. Yep...cute and fiesty.
