Well, since no new birds are showing up, I'm still studying the ones that are here each day.
I love the big Blue Jays.....they have gorgeous feathers.
At least 2 shades of blue and pristine white and black.....bars of beauty
The Goldfinch in winter looks so dull in comparison, but makes up for it when it gets its bright yellow and black and white summer colors.
Thinking of summer?
How nice of him to spread his wings when I clicked....the better to study his tail feathers :-)
I'm guessing female for this one....pretty dull in color. Harder to tell in the wintertime.
White edges to all the wing and tail feathers.
Junco....not much color here, but such a lovely shade of dark grey.
Up close, there are subtle variations in his feathers. I never get a good shot of the pink bill and this one isn't very pink. In most of my shots the camera blurs the bill....doesn't seem to like pink.
The woodpeckers have some of the prettiest feathers, of course.
Spots rather than bars.....and a splash of red on the head for decoration. I like that one stray feather on his back :-)
Going out of town tomorrow for a couple of days....may post, may not....depends on if we see anything interesting :-)

Our only home birds at the moment: chickadees and nuthatches ... with an odd pileated through every once in a while.
Beautiful pictures! This is my first visit but I'll be sure to check in every day to see your photos.
BTW, what kind of camera do you use?
I adore your birds! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks again for the feather study.I hope you feel God's peace and blessing in the New Year.
Blessings,Ruth
More stunning shots Mary.
Cicero: Those are some pretty nice ones to have regularly...all among my favorites :-)
Angel: Hi! Thanks....I use a Fujifilm FinePix S100FS.
Jenn Jilks: Thanks1
Ruth: You, too! God is good to give us these varied birds.
Roy: Thanks!
Great pictures, Mary! I love the details of the feathers. It's good to see that someone else is as fascinated with birds and thier feathers as I am. Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures.
Wishing you Peace, Love and Joy in the coming year!
I think these are some of your best captures yet. Love that Blue Jay and the Woodpecker! Right now our home birds are house sparrows, juncos, and one Mr. & Mrs. Cardinal. I don't know where everyone else has gone.
Safe travels, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! =)
Sometimes the At home birds are the est because they always come back just in case you don't get that perfect shot the first time.
Amazingly sharp photos Mary.
I'm sure you will see something on your trip.
Happy New Year!

We have tons of Goldfinches this year also... They all seem to be a little different color, don't they???? And some of mine have alot of white in their tail feathers...
Happy New Year.

Betsy
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you! Looks like the birds are pretty happy!
Mary: I love all your bird photos. It is strange how some birds add color for the winter while other dull down.
Your Blue Jay is such a stunning looking bird Mary. Lovely shots. I rather like the subtle lemony shades of your Goldfinch in winter. Hope you and Mike have a wonderful New Year!
The Blue Jay has wonderful colours.
These are more wonderful pictures of your home birds. I agree that the feathers on the Blue Jay are gorgeous.
Have safe travel and a very Happy New Year.
I love the way its colors make those squares on its wings Mary.
I would like to wish you and Mike and truly fantastic 2010 my friend. In some ways the previous year was not the best one for us, but we got through it and survived. I wish you much joy, happiness, kealthe, wealth and all you could long for. Thanks for being such a wonderful friend!!
Happy New Year, Mary! I was going to spend part of this day catching up on blogging, but Neal is on his way here so we will sit and reminiscence instead!
Happy New Year!! Beautiful shots of your "home" birds. That's all I've been seeing lately :)
...your bluejay photos are beautiful, and they are so colorful and brighten the gray winter landscape so often! Love your cute little downy as well! Wishing you all the best in the coming new year!
What wonderful photos! Wish I could bet this close to the birds around here - but at least I can enjoy yours.
Amazing how much the gold finches change colors, isn't it?
Mary, these are excellent! I thought that was awful nice of him to spread his tail feathers, too, just as you snapped! You will have to hire him again as your model since he can take directions!
