Since I didn't have a blog last summer, I can publish old pictures to pass the time until spring :-) I had a couple favorable comments about a Brown Thrasher picture I posted one day, so I thought I look back through what I have. This bird showed up fairly early last spring and apparently nested in the area, because I had a couple batches of young ones show up later. It is a very large and handsome bird with its streaked chest, yellow eye, and brown color!
This picture was from early March when he showed up....I can tell because the Violets haven't taken over my flowerbed yet and the winter seed mess is still there!
The first young one that I saw was on the ground and I didn't realize what it was....the tail looks much shorter. I scared it and it tried to climb my roof to get away from me! I felt very badly.
I hope since they bred successfully here, they will be back!

Your brown thrashers are just super, Mary! Since they are already singing here, these fit right in with my current birding. I video'ed one singing the other day, because I really like their song--better than the mocking bird even. To me brown thrashers have an even meaner expression than the mocking bird you spoke of on Monday. I'm going to have to get my feeders closer to the window as you and Sandpiper have--your pictures both come out with so much more detail.
Brucesc, The Thrasher does tend to have a "mean" expression. Must be part of that particular family to intimdate the lesser birds :-) How neat that you have them already. Mine hasn't shown up, but hopefully will in a week or so. I hope you show your video! I haven't checked your blog yet today!
I have only seen a Brown Thrasher a couple of times but both were great sightings. I love to see this bird. Great pictures!

These pictures are stunning. I've never been able to get a good picture of a brown thrasher. I start to take a picture and every single time they fly away!

Thanks...it looks a lot like several Thrushes that are seen here. You'll have to post pics of your similar birds so we can compare!
