If I get lucky, every winter a few Bluebirds stop by for a brief visit. They never seem to stay at my house, but I welcome them for the time that I see them! I have a Bluebird box, but they don't seem to like where it is located and never stay to live in it. I need to try moving it to a new location they might like better.
A pair on the ground. I have one male and several females, I think. I haven't figured out for sure how many I have seen out there.
The male is checking to see if the Downy and the Mockingbird have left the suet so he can get some.
The female on the roof.
I think they know this little dish was designed for mealworms and wonder why I don't put any in it! I tried some apple bits, some crumbled up suet....whatever I thought they might eat.
"You expect me to eat peanutbutter???"
"Where are the mealworms????"
"Apple???"
The female is a pale imitation of her bright colored mate, but I think she is very pretty anyway.
Bluebirds are VERY blue!
The colors are so bright and cheery in the winter.
I wonder where the phrase "The bluebird of happiness" came from? They certainly make me feel happy when I see them!
Very bright back view.
Looking up at the suet again.
"Your suet is much better than this apple stuff."
Tail view
A little too close maybe :-)
They like this little solar light to sit on :-)
Giving me the eye.
This male looks just perfect.
I hope they stay around for awhile....until we get some sunshine for my photos, would be nice!

I've never seen a bluebird, although I think there are some houses for them along some fencerows...
They are such pretty birds. I like the way the female is much the same colour/pattern as her mate, but softer...
They are such beautiful birds. good shots,
Oh how gorgeous. I would be thrilled to have one of these little guys visit my yard.
Oh your bluebirds are soooooo Lovely!!
Makes my heart SING :)
These are beautiful pictures of the bluebirds. I think they are our favorite birds. We have several pairs around now, but we don't know if any will use our nesting box either.
Hi Mary, I posted my backyard birds today also... Mine of course included some of my favorite birds, the BLUEBIRDS...
Loved seeing your blues....
Hugs,
Betsy
These are so gorgeous, Mary. I have just returned from my first visit to your wonderful country - Philadelphia and NY. We were city-based, but managed to see Sparrows and Starlings on Liberty Island (through flakes of snow), an Egret on the NY wetlands from the train, one cold squirrel, some geese on the Delaware . . . and raptors (?hawks) above Central Park. I would so have loved to have seen a Cardinal! We found wonderful churches in Philadelphia, too - and loved the Amish wares on the market stalls.
Very, very pretty....He does seem to be a bit upset with the menu though. Such expressions!
Oh, Mary, they are SO sweet! I love their color and the fact that they do brighten life up when you feel kind've "down" from winter dreariness. I love your pictures of them! Just wonderful! Maybe a pair will set up housekeeping in the house this spring!
Oh, thanks for your wonderful comments on my piece-fulness blog! I could tell you really enjoyed seeing the quilt show pictures. I hope you get to go to some shows this year also, too.
Thank you everyone! I guess your comments sort of answer my question of why "the bluebird of happiness"....they seem to make everyone smile and feel happy! That gorgeous blue color just amazes and they seem so good natured.
Caroline: I wish you had gotten out my way while in the states! I would have guaranteed you lots of cardinals.
Mary, you got a bunch of excellent shots. They are so pretty...I never see any here. but today I saw three pair of cardinals out here at the same time, plus all the normal. I tried taking a few pics but haven't downloaded them to the computer...
Awesome, awesome, awesome shots!!
you are just so very fortunate to experience their visit! The photographs are just beautiful!!
What an absolute delight Mary. I don't seem to keep them here either in the summer. They always check out the BB house, but then move on. Last year I put a raccoon guard on it, so maybe that will help.

Your bluebird pics are gorgeous! We have bluebirds, but don't see much of them in the winter, maybe they go a little farther south.
Very lovely bluebird photos. I only rarely see them in my area. Thanks for posting.
