As we were leaving the Henderson area, we saw a heron in a flooded field that usually has some wildlife in it, so we stopped for a photo.
As I took a photo, I realized there were some "brown animals" in the right lower corner!
A Raccoon mom with her two babies!
They were busy chasing something in the shallow water and weeds.
At one point they went deep into the flowers and we would just see a back or ears sticking up. Mom spent a lot of time at one spot really digging and chasing. Would love to know what she was finding to eat! Little minnows? frogs? crawdads?
They were pretty far away so my shots are so-so even the ones I did with the big extender lens. I'm sorry that I'm always apologizing for my photos, but I never feel like I am getting the quality that I should and I hate to post poor photos.
Mom was very brown and the babies were more gray.
They worked their way down the field through the yellow flowers towards us, but never got really close before we decided we had to leave. I just love it when I get a bonus sighting like this! I started the day looking for butterflies and ended up with raccoons!

Mary it is not so important to have superb quality photos, it is more important to just see this charming family group in the wild. Thank you for documenting it and sharing it with the rest of us.
How wonderful that you got to see and photograph the Raccoon family! I love these unexpected sighting, too! Your pictures look great to me!
This is just an amazing post, Mary! These are great photos, too. We love raccoons, though I would feel a certain sympathy for folk who have them doing damage because they live in too close proximity! These ones are utterly delightful ... what fun you must have had watching their antics. Would LOVE to have been there, too!
I would say the day ended on a positive note. Those guys are so cute.
Wow! How fortunate to see these guys! I LOVE finding wild animals, especially Moms with babies, and it just never happens! And I loved looking at the photos! What an amazing experience for you!
Hi Mary....What fantastic photos of the Raccoon family..most likely look for frogs (which is one of the thing there supposed to eat instead of our suet and bird seeds) : }}
They are just adorable here in these photos...but as the saying goes, but not on my backyard! LOL
I have seen them eating fresh water clams, at a lake, but here I bet it is frogs!! A delicacy you know : }}

Cute little family of raccoons... Guess they feel safe being out in the daytime there. Here --raccoons only come out at night, so we don't see them very often.
Hope you have a great Memorial Day Weekend. It's going to be a hot one here (temps. in the 90's)... Yipes!!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
Those are wonderful photos of the racoons, Mary! Thank you for sharing, and have a lovely weekend!
This is making me anxious to get to the strip pits...I LOVE seeing things like this...all unexpected.
How fun to be able to watch them.
I LOVE raccoons! Nice photo captures!
How adorable!! I've never seen raccoons in the daytime!
You never need to apologize for your pictures.
Whatever they were after has to be better for them than what one foraged from our cooler last summer. Let's see if I remember: four hotdogs, a pound of grapes, half a pound of cheese, and a chocolate bar. Kudos for this mom for teaching good eating.
How lucky to come upon this scene! Good work. It is odd to see them out in the daytime though. I am having a war with these critters right now. As cute as they are, they raise havoc on my birdfeeders,
