I was watching some dragonflies at home the other evening.....
These two can be seen on our pond regularly....the small Blue Dasher at the top and the larger Slaty Skimmer below it.
While sitting in the front yard, I could see a couple flying around in front of the garage and landing on the "vine tree". They were chasing little bugs that were swarming around. These seemed really big to me as I watched them. I walked over and took photos.....but don't know what kind they are. (NOTE: Bug Guide says this is a Great Blue Skimmer)
I don't usually get photos that show the eyes so clearly.....and the wing patterns.
If I've seen this one before with that white face and those turquoise eyes, I don't recognize it from this angle. It was high on the tree and I could not see the back color at all.
I thought is was very pretty!

Thank you everyone! Those dragonflies were so big, they were easy to take photos of.
Ann: Our pond is a shared pond with 4 other houses....only about an acre in size.
Well, with all the wildlife you have in your area, I think I need to make a visit out your way. Only dreaming :)
Excellant shots of the deagonflies Mary. They are spooky up close. The only thing I see here are Ebony Jewelwing Damselflies.
