Squirrels are out..

It's snowing again this morning.....lightly. The squirrel in the Oak tree out front was having a good time exploring the ground once he came down off of his alert pose. There is only the slightest bit of snow to hamper his searching yesterday.

Out back on the deck it looks like a different world! Heavy ice on everything and the squirrels scrambling around on the deck looking for seeds that aren't encased in ice.

Squirrel #2 says, "Give me a hand up there, will you? Scoot over!"

They all agreed to share......even the Downy.

Being a squirrel in winter is not all "fun and games". This poor little guy has been showing up off and on and has a bad skin problem.....balding in spots. I had squirrels with this problem before. He always looks a bit pathetic, but the day of the ice storm was the worst.......he had to be very cold and his poor little tail was totally encased with ice. I looked for him today, and didn't see him, but I'm praying that he'll show up again in a few days.

Ohhh, you have an orange bellied squirrel! I've only ever had one. Mine seem to have white tummies. Just look at those beautiful ice crystals covering everything. The poor bedraggled looking squirrel in the last picture!!! Poor little guy. He looks very young. Hopefully you had some sun today so that he could thaw out. We got only snow where I live in this most recent storm, but I spent the day working at my Mom's house today and the saw a lot of ice on top of their snow over there. Amazing what a difference an hour away can make.

Everything began melting today...I hope this is the last of winter. I really hope to see that little guy again. It broke my heart seeing him shivering there in that feeder. Most of my squirrels are orange bellied...I posted them once before. I believe they are Fox Squirrels....definitely foxy in color :-)
