Greetings from Tucson! Sunshine, hot temps, lots of cactus and brown :-)
I had to include a couple of cloud shots from the plane.
The view from my sister's front window of the Catalina Foothills mountains
My sister has a very nice backyard for birds. A female Cardinal Even though the Cardinal is the state bird back home in Indiana, the ones out here are longer and leaner and very red.
We decided the difference is a longer tail.
I always love seeing the bunnies :-)
Gila Woodpecker male
Sharing with a House Finch
The male has a small red spot on the top of its head.
House Finch
Singing his heart out
Some of the House Finches here look either yellow or orange.
Mourning Dove
A different dove....the White-winged Dove
You can compare it to the Mourning dove.......white along the wing, no spots, and a white tail when seen underneath, and a hash mark on the cheek.
Phainopepla male
I think these are beautiful birds and they like to sit high in the tree looking out over everything.
Gambel's Quail female strutting across the yard
A male with two females
The male Gambel's Quail. These guys scurry around so fast, I have trouble keeping up with them, but I think they are cute birds.

I love those cloud shots. Seeing the different birds must be exciting.
HI Mary, Thanks for sharing some of Tucson with us... I love the clouds --but those birds are awesome...
Have a great time.
Hugs,
Betsy
Soaking in some warm, dry sunshine eh?! Lucky you. Nice to have a change of scenery. Enjoy!
Oh, I hope you have a run-in with the gregarious Cactus Wren. They are fun birds. Most movies set in desert areas will have the Cactus Wren sounding off in background. They are the er-er-er-er-er that sounds like a faulty car engine starting. I enjoy them every spring running along our roof and chastising me for interrupting their bug chasing antics.
Wow Mary, I didn't even know you were going on a vacation. What a wonderful place to photograph birds. They are beautiful! Great post. Enjoy!
Hi Mary...these are fabulous...the clouds are wonderful...
There all great I guess if i needed to choose ..I like the male Cardinal with his crest sticking up so nice and the cute little bunnies and Quail...oh heck I like them all!!
Grace have a great visit!!
I think the cardinal's crest may be longer, too.
I love the quails - they are so cute!!
Wow, you are really capturing some beauty while there...I had never heard of the Phainopepla...and would love the see the Gambel's quail in real life. I think they are so pretty.
I almost thought the cardinal had a taller topknot than ours...
Yes, your sister definitely has great birds in the yard! I really enjoyed seeing these. I'm not familiar at all with the black bird that has a name that starts with a P. That was interesting.
Loved seeing you yesterday! Maybe we'll have another chance before you leave town.
