Sunday there were 6 cars that showed up to run the Food Rally.
Getting the food prepared and on the car is the first step before the rally begins.
Most food is wrapped in foil and placed on the engine somewhere warm, but a few of the guys were also taping and wiring food packages to their catalytic converters under the cars.

Here we have a package of Venison being taped to the catalytic converter with aluminum tape. Hmmm.....more on that later.
A fancy prep station for this couple.
These are Egg Cakes being put in these cans.....butter, bread crumbs, cheese, eggs. That's all Mike remembers. These did not completely cook during the rally, but the cooks finished them off at home and said they tasted great!
This couple had barbecue and au gratin potatoes strapped in packets to the engine.
Removing the food later at the end.
This couple was declared to be "Prepared Class" because of the generator strapped to the rear of the car. Inside they had a George Foreman cooker, a crock pot, and a rice cooker hooked up, plus a small refrigerator hooked up to keep the Guinness Stout cold (a bribe for the judge).

The rally itself required answering questions about the Beverly Hillbillies TV show in order to choose the correct direction to turn at each intersection.
Sample question: What was Mr. Drysdales first name?
Left: Wilburn
Straight: Millwood
Right: Milburn
(Which way would you have gone??)
***********
Seventy miles later (90 for some cars) the cars ended up at a member's garage where the food is unloaded and hopefully cooked by now!
This couple needed a ladder to get to the food??

Somewhere in the course of the rally, the venison packet disappeared leaving this couple without a main course......
.....they had a very elegant table setting......
....and no main course except peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that they brought for their young son....served with steamed broccoli and dressing and wine.
It was also Chris's birthday. The cake had a plastic cover on it and their son sat on it along the way :-) Oh, well.
Here is the Barbecue and au gratin potatoes served with root beer floats.
This was a nice table setting....the cloth has little pylons all over it (you have to be a car person)
Ham and turkey and spinach wraps cooked in the George Foreman, Savannah Rice, fruit and cheese, and delicious cookie crumbles from the crock pot. The cookies burned in the crock pot, but what was salvageable was very good! Oh, yes and that Guinness Stout for the judges.
Salmon....not a good photo. They had to microwave it a little bit to finish it off, but it was tasty. With it they served potatoes and sauteed mushrooms.
And here we have Chicken and Salsa with Au gratin potatoes. Their dessert...those egg cakes back at the beginning...didn't get cooked.
The final couple had excellent chicken and beef kabobs....very good....and biscuits that didn't get done. It is really hard to judge cooking time and heat on an engine!
A good time had by all.....especially the judges.
(Oh, yes....the answer was Milburn....turn right)
This is a link for a cookbook called: "Manifold Destiny: The One and Only Guide to Cooking On Your Car Engine."

What a fun day Mary. I have never hear of something like this before but it sure is a good idea.
I forgot to add ..... I would never have remembered which word was for what direction and probably landed up in China or somewhere. LOL!!
Now that is one interesting way to try and cook a meal! Personally, I think I'll stick to more tried and true conventional methods -- thigh I'm sure everyone had a lark trying their hand at the prize.
Sounds like good fun. Hope no one had upset tummy after it.
Joan: If you turn the correct direction, there will be a paper plate stapled to a pole as confirmation in about a quarter of a mile. No plate...you went the wrong way....go back and try again.
Cicero: I'm sure it is much easier to cook at home, but for guys that love cars and like spending a nice day driving around the countryside...it's a lot of fun :-)
Don:No, all the food was good...that was fully cooked. Usually if something doesn't get cooked all the way, they finish it off in a microwave or stove.
HI Mary...my good laugh for the days goes to this fun loving great ingenuity group!!
What a hoot!!
This is all new to me!! Looks like a good time was had by all!
Interesting & fun!
I just added a link to my post for a cookbook for cooking on your car engine..."Manifold Destiny"
This looks like a very fun event. A food rally sounds like a good idea to me. Some of the cooks were very creative.
Looks like everyone had a great time.... I think the guy with the generator had the right idea.... ha ha
But--there was alot of creativity in this project.... Thanks for sharing.
Hugs,
Betsy
I love this idea, and had never heard of anything like it. Of course didn't even expect food could be cooked on a car's engine. What fun it must have been.
B.
Looks like fun.....
