Any trip to the Henderson Slough area is bound to turn up something at one of the many units of this conservation area.
We saw Great Blue Heron stalking in several spots. I like this one with the corn in the background. If you could see beyond the corn, the Ohio River is just a few yards away.
Oops.....must have spooked him!
Another flooded field. I can't help but wonder how much they find in these flooded fields to eat?
Almost invisible here, but I liked all the colors and patterns.
We have searched for over a year trying to find where the Jenny Hole Unit is and finally on this trip, they had put up a sign! So off we went on a new road to....????
The roads are all gravel and weave in and out of farm fields and forest and water very close to the road and often over it. We got lucky on this road and only drove through water once. We need a truck or 4-wheel drive!
Past their prime, but I thought these roses along the road were still pretty.
From the window of the car crossing a very narrow bridge. There were a few spots where the "swamp" was right there next to the gravel road. Good thing it hadn't rained for a few days. They don't call this area the "river bottoms" without reason!

Mike and Curt taking photos of the rather large expanse of water. This is one of the areas closed off during the water fowl migration season.
I like the Cypress trees with their broad bases standing in the water.
This photo is a barn that we saw last March. We have discovered that it is where the barn swallows that I keep seeing are living.....

Nice one , good shots of the swallow chicks. you seem to have as much water as we do now the Nile is at its highest point, difference is yours is natural, the Nile is governed. having a barrage 60 miles down river and 40 up river . being Esna and Quena, most of the flow of the Nile is now governed from the High Dam just beyond Aswan. that now forms Lake Nasser a massive man made lake that reaches well into the Sudan. will put a link on, nilelife2. so you can get the map of the area,
I am pleased you spooked him as it gave you a great shot Mary. :)
Another wonderful place and pictures.
Wonderful Pictures Mary! I always enjoy your your blog!
Yep a great trip. I love the Cypress in the swamp! That is so cool that you got the dragonfly in the photo with the swallows! Fun Fun!
I can almost never get a photo of the herons. I suppose that it is because I usually see them from the freeway.
I just come back from my walk about no canon (big gun)camera today just my pocket one , and guess what. I saw two dragons i have not seen before, and Purple herons but like you I can never get close to them I may Ask one if the fisher boys to take me out on to the wetland area now its flooded, they seem to get quite close to the birds well close enough for me to get a decent shot.
I don't know where to begin...I love all these. I love that shot right below the flowers...and love the one of the pair of swallows...they are adorable.
Great pictures from Henderson, Mary.... I love seeing the Swallows the most... Man---they really 'own' that old barn don't they???? I'll bet they were wondering what you were doing there!!!! ha
Glad you finally found Jenny Hole.. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall and get to be there during water fowl migration season?????
