We went back to Mouteau Park this afternoon to see if the Killdeer was still on her nest....
......yes! Still hiding behind her little weed pretending that she isn't there. It's been a week, so I hope all continues to go well for her.
Her mate was in the road this time....
"It's all right, dear....I'll lure them away!"
Since we were there we went up to the lake to see if there were dragonflies or butterflies hanging around. I was happy to find a few Halloween Pennants! This is the only park where I know to find them, but they have been there each year. I think it is a male.
I love the bright orange spot on the edge of the wings!
The wind was blowing the grass stalk it was on, and my back shot isn't very good.
I believe this is a Slaty Skimmer....I forgot to look it up.
The Eastern Pondhawk.....always available wherever I seem to go.
A tiny butterfly in the grass.....Pearl Crescent.
Most of the time, it wouldn't open its wings.

The Killdeer brings back lots of memories. Mostly of the old gravel roads I used to walk along or ride my bike on. There were Killdeer all along the edges doing their best to lure you away from the nests they made in the gravel by the edge. I do remember their eggs reminded me of the gravel so I suppose that's why they chose those locations.
The dragon fly I have had one so far and filmed. Your's are nicer.

Abe: They do pick such dangerous places for their nests, but I guess enough of them survive. They are such pretty birds. I'm hoping to see babies from this nest. I've never seen a little one.

Ruth: Thanks! My knowledge only extends to the 5-6 that I see all the time. If I see a new one, I have no idea what it is...and I'm terrible with damselflies and most of the butterflies other then the really easy ones.
Nice collection I like to see whats on from other parts of the world.

That first dragon is spectacular Mary. Lovely selection again today.
Superb dragonfly series Mary. Ours never hold still for me and I can only spot them when they are in flight. Age and eyesight don't get along so well.
