More about gourds.....

Since some of you have asked about the gourds for birdhouses, I'll give what little information I know. For me, it started last year at the Kuntsfest in New Harmony.... If you go to this post, it shows a wagon full of the gourds where I bought the one that I turned into a birdhouse. I bought a really pretty plump green one. I set it on some newspaper in the house and left it alone all winter, eventually moving it to the garage. Over the winter it dries out inside and becomes really light. I didn't pay any attention to how long this took. I asked Eve at Sunnyside Up how to make a birdhouse for wrens after she mentioned one in her blog. She told me to drill a half inch hole in it and shake out any dry stuff inside. Mike put two little holes in the top and put a wire through to hang it up. That is how simple it is! I didn't do anything to mine to paint it or decorate it and if you saw my photos of the birds living in it, it looked pretty ugly. This year after the Chickadees moved in and were successful, I decided I wanted more! These are the seeds that I bought at a local store. It has instructions for making Martin houses on the back. For Martins, you cut a 2" hole. I would think it would be hard to keep the House Sparrows out. Don't put a perch of any sort. The Chickadees and Wrens fly straight in or they stop above it and drop down and hang on the opening. These gourds are very versatile. In the post from the Kuntsfest you can see other crafty things people did with some of them. I bought this beautiful carved one....notice the squirrel on the side :-) It is a bird feeder, but I didn't want to hang it outside, so I have kept it as a decoration indoors.
I know places here where people have dozens of these hanging up high for the Martins to live in. I've always wondered how they get them cleaned out each year.
I'm sure there are lots of directions on the Internet for making these, too.

Trying to grow birdhouses....

Since my one gourd birdhouse this year was such a success.....first a chickadee family and then a wren family....I wanted to try growing some of the gourds and make more for next year. Mike planted a few seeds behind the garage and here is the vine the way it looks now. Could stand to have the grass cut under it, I'd say!
I'm concerned about what looks like some sort of blossom end rot. Won't get any gourds that way.

However, here is one little one beginning.....

....and one larger one! At least one new birdhouse on the way!

"Is that for me????"
"Do I get one, too??"
Wonder if they work for Titmice?
If I don't manage to grow any gourds, I will just have to go out and buy some more! I would like to try painting some to look a bit more attractive than the one that I had up this year. If I paint birds on them, will it scare the birds away rather than attract them?? What do you think?

Odds and ends from the wetlands....

My last wetlands visit was full of interesting things to see. This Mockingbird was sitting on the gate to greet us when we arrived.
On the slough area, we saw a heron wading on the far side.....not good photos unfortuately, though we both tried. I wasn't sure what it was until I got home. Looks like a "1st summer" Green Heron.

I have never seen one raise its crest like this! Looks like a "crazy bird"!

He was busy stalking the edge of the lake and keeping low.
A smaller creature along the path....hmmm...need to watch my own shadow next time.
An Eastern Tailed Blue.
A different blue.....Blue Dasher. Dragonflies are still very plentiful and I saw at least 5 kinds that day.
Turtle sunning on the log

Young Robin in the clearing
Fungi #1
Fungi #2

A few leaves already turned.
We drove over to Henderson to make sure the Eagle's nest was empty and the heron's nests. A distant shot looking out at the cypress trees where the nests are.....taken for the clouds rather than anything else.
A few heron still hanging around the water in the area. I thought this one look nice among the pink flowers. He was really moving fast as he stalked off in the opposite direction.

Squirrel Sunday.....

Hmmmm.....Looks like someone is once again living off the "fat" of the land."WHO are you calling fat??????"
"I'm NOT fat.....YOU just take unflattering photos!"
"I'll come back when you apologize.....
....how could I get fat when you hang the feeders on this skinny pole that I can't climb?"
(I'm sorry, Star.....I apologize....
you're right....its the camera's fault.....
I'll bring you some seeds.)

"...the meadow is taller than you are"

Mike dropped me off at the wetlands, while he went to get a haircut. When I got out of the car, he said, "How am I going to find you....the meadow is taller than you are!" Since I'm only 5'2" and he is 6'4" I'm used to this sort of comment, but in this case he was being quite factual. The path heading around the meadow is now lined with grasses that are taller than I am!
At times I was literally looking right into the tall grasses....which are quite pretty in the sunlight.

I really like this type of grass and how it looked.

These white and pink flowers have taken over the shallow marsh area that used to be covered with small yellow flowers. So many changes right now, but still beautiful.
Don't know what this flower is, but there was just one growing among the other flowers on the marsh. Sure stands out beautifully!
I liked these leaves lining the marsh. So delicate looking.

Beautiful patterns from their leaves.
A few spots of purple asters sprinkled among the many yellow flowers.

These bugs were everywhere I looked today! Our newspaper this morning showed a photo of them and very helpfully identified them for me as Soldier Beetles or also known as Pennsylvania Leatherwings. They are helpful in killing other pests. Nice to know that since I saw so many of them!
Here they are again on the yellow flowers.....
....and on the thistles!
Some thistle fluff
One little skipper enjoying the white flowers.
I saw more and will do a further post on Monday with some birds and such. Have to stretch this out since I'm still watching tennis every day :-)
