Finally, I have some birds showing up at home! I was pleased to see two of my woodpeckers working on the suet block on the big Ash tree. I always enjoy watching them.
Mrs. Red-bellied with a sunflower seed she picked off the block.
I thought she looked nice with the reddish leaves behind her in the distance.
A little closer.
Working her way over to the block....
.....leaning in for a seed.....
.....good thing she has a long beak!
Finding a hole in the bark to stick it in so she can peck at it.
Hammering away.
Was that tiny bit worth all that effort?
The Downy stayed up high on the tree until the Red-bellied went away and then she backed her way down the tree to see what it was eating.
She prefers to get underneath the block and pick from there, since her beak isn't as long.
Nice to have some birds to post for a change!

Great pictures of the birds and the colorful tree just sets them off!
I like those red leaves in the background too!

Red bellied woodpeckers are not common in my area, but every few yeats it as if the province has been invaded by them. Apparently this year is turning out to be an invasion year!!! I do hope we get one visiting in bird alley. They are handsome birds to see!
Your photos are lovely! Ann
Stunning pics Mary, Its been a while since I saw our local woodpecker.
Just wonderful woodpecker photos! I was particularly impressed that you were able to get shots of a downy! Wow. I am hoping to get some pictures of a Gila Woodpecker...they are very shy even though they are frequent visitors...I'm going to have to set up a tri-pod or something and be sneaky!
I think they are such handsome birds....always have enjoyed watching woodpeckers.
Just SO beautiful Mary, and the background color just inhances the woodpecker.
