Many of you know that I love barns with quilt squares on them. I have followed the "quilt trail" in parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana so far. I knew on this trip I would have a chance of seeing some new ones. I also like murals and interesting barns, so this is a variety of some things I saw along the way.![]()
This Quilt Barn is in Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
This isn't a quilt square.....I believe it is a Pennsylvania Dutch symbol.....but I liked it.
A close-up of the symbol
I have forgetten what little town this was in, but I liked the two towers.
An old barn somewhere in Ohio.
We stopped at this little town for ice cream.....that's what all the umbrellas are for.....but they had this huge mural on the wall of a building next door. It was the 4th of July when we stopped so it seemed appropriate!
A closer look.
A free standing quilt square in a bed of flowers.
On the way home from our trip we drove through Marshall County, Indiana and there are a lot of quilt barns there. I had one of their maps, so we drove around looking for a few of them.
This old barn with two squares was one of my favorites.....
......these are Emily's Choice and Tiger Lily. Our daughter is named Emily, so I will have to try making this quilt square :-)
This was located at the Pickin Patch.....a pick them yourself blueberry place. We bought some already picked to take home with us.
I really liked their nice "Blueberry" square. A very lovely design!
This place had 3 squares.....one on the garage.....
....one on a stand in the side yard.....
.....and one at the edge of the woods in the hostas.
Another enthusiastic quilter.....again there were three squares. The top one is Bears Paw......
....this one is Black Eyed Susan.....
.....No idea what this one is called, but liked the big strawberries, too and wondered about the dates.
Just a nice old barn and silo.
This one was up around Shipshewana at a park with an old mill. I have more photos from there to post later.
This one was way across a field from the road. If I figure out which names go to which squares from this map I have, I will add them. My sister was doing the navigating so I didn't get my usual "visual match up" with the map or check off the ones we saw.
A nice square that showed up well.
We saw THREE round barns on the way home! This one was on our side of the road and we saw it soon enough for Mike to stop. The other two were on the other side and more hidden. I didn't realize there were so many round barns in northern Indiana still.
The next three photos were taken in La Grange, IN which is near Shipshewana where we were staying. A nice array of 4 quilt squares on this building.
And a fancy one on another building.
There was also a nice mural.
I realized after getting this ready to post that I had forgotten about the floral quilt squares we saw, so I will have to post them separately with more Shipshewana photos.
This square in on a building in Shipshewana which is Amish country, so the simplicity of it fits a typical Amish quilt design.

More great views of this unusual, but splendid practice Mary, thanks for showing us.
What fabulous pictures, Mary... I love seeing all of the quilt squares on the barns/etc. SO NEAT....
Shipshewana must be a fabulous place... I'd love to visit there sometime.
Hugs,
Betsy
You had quite a tour visiting these quilt barns, and you got some great pictures. I would just like to remind you that we have quilt barns down here in Tennessee as well.
THose designs must take awhile to put up,but they sure make the building look pretty.
Neat pictures, Mary! I like the quilt barns, and just barns of all kinds. When we were visiting in Indiana, we went looking for round barns and found one really good one. I like the murals, too!
Great post! It reminded me of Eleanor Burns recent series on Quilt in a Day where she featured the quilt blocks found on barns. I believe she was to some of the same places as you were.
Have a great day!
Hi Mary...aww.. I love this post ...a great sight seeing all those old barns and quilt designs!!
Got a kick out of the one with the strawberry faces!!lol
The two barn without quilts I relly like!!
Havea great week end !!
Thank you everyone! Little by little I am getting around to your sites to catch up. I appreciate your comments when I have not been a good commenter in return. We are still having water problems in our basement when it rains and my dead dogwood/vine tree finally fell over....lots to keep us busy.
I almost wish I was a quilter, so I could make up a few of these designs! There are a number here that I have never seen before!
My goodness Mary, you really hit the jackpot! Such a wonderful variety. I wish we had some quilt barns around here.Just that one I showed you and the whole barn is painted in quilt pattern.
B.
