I felt rather hopeful about spring when I looked out last week and saw the pond only half frozen. It's been covered with ice most of the winter so far!
However, the very next day we got cold temps, more ice, and about an inch of snow. Sigh.

I see a bit of hopeful black on the Goldfinch's forehead! Maybe he knows something about spring coming that I haven't observed yet.
The Mockingbird
I really like Mockingbirds, even if they do tend to be hoggish at the feeders.
"I HATE WINTER!"
No one can look quite so "mean" as Mr. Mockingbird :-)
The Starling and the Mockingbird are both very aggressive over food. The Starling eventually chased the Mockingbird away. I had to contend with a small flock of mixed blackbirds eating everything during the cold spell. I'll be glad when they go back to the fields and away from my feeders.
According to my Sibley, this is a first summer male Red-winged Blackbird. Rather pretty at this stage.
A mostly full-fledged male Red-winged Blackbird. I see a bit of spotty feathers still on the back.

Before the snow fell, I had a White-crowned Sparrow searching for food.

A lovely series of bird photos Mary, I think they are probably looking forward to spring also.
I enjoyed seeing all these birds.Right now it would seem like spring is slowly making an entrance here,but I won't hold my breath waiting for that.

We have had the odd White-crowned Sparrow in England, but very rare.
You have a larger assortment of birds than I have here. This winter has to have been really hard for them. A couple of weeks ago I had a wild turkey in the yard looking for seeds that had fallen from the feeders.

The starlings and cowbirds can just wipe out the food here in no time! I don't think I have ever seen a mockingbird near this house!

My feelings are right there with your Mockingbird! This winter stuff is getting mighty old. This morning it was 6 deg. and we got another 1" of snow last night. The sun is shining, and that does help a bit. Good looking birds Mary. My Carolina wrens apparently have taken off for warmer climates-smart birds!

i wonder if we'll even see spring... i'm guessing with the way winter's held on so tight that we'll go straight into summer, skipping spring altogether, sigh... on a lighter note though... i simply love dropping by to see your photos. they're always so uplifting to one's spirit. hope all is well. have a great day~
I love seeing all your birds Mary. I just didn't get that many different kinds this winter. Lots of the some old ones, and I still get lots of enjoyment watching them.
