Mike noticed all the birds take off and head for the bushes, so he knew the hawk must be around! Sure enough it landed on the rail after scaring everyone away. Mike came and got me, and I was thrilled to see that it didn't seem in any hurry to leave. That provided ample time for photos :-)
This was my favorite shot.....he turned around and faced my way right before he took off.
I believe it is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
The smallest of the hawks in this area. He has been hanging around all summer, which is why I have not had a lot of bird photos.

My world is in the process of turning white at the moment! We are suppose to have snow all day long.
The squirrel got in early to get some food before it was all covered up.
The wren going for the suet.
There is no point in my putting much more seed out until the snow stops.
It is being buried as fast as I put seed out there!
A lot of hungry and unhappy birds out there at the moment!
Probably easy pickings for that hawk today.

What a film star that hawk is, getting his makeup on and hair done before he sat for his portrait.
As humans with our live and let live ethic, it is not easy of love raptors but they all have a place in the scheme of things and need to eat to survive. Just as well we remain sorry for the victims or we would loose our humanity.

For times like these when the sow is covering up the food, it is good to have at least one feeder with a roof. Thank you for being an earth-angel and feeding the hungry.

That was definitely "up close and personal." What a neat opportunity for you. Wonderful pictures! Pretty smart hawk--Probably thought if he sat still enough the little guys would just fly in at his feet and he could have breakfast without any effort.
Hope you didn't get too much snow--Fortunately it was all south of us this time. Often anything that comes from St. Louis moves right up through your area and to us.

Wow, you really got some wonderful photos...and I absolutely love the one of the wren. Love the one right before where the hawk flies off, too...it is just so sharp and clear.
