The Downy Woodpeckers are the ones that accept my tree limb strapped to the shepherds hooks most readily. Mainly because that is where all the suet is.....their favorite!
I added the limb to give them a better place to land than on the metal poles.
Here is a lovely male.....
.....and a female checking out the left over peanut butter on the pine cone.
"Peek-a-boo!"
Their favorite suet cages were almost empty when I noticed the Downys hanging around, so I hustled out and filled all of them.
One of them even tried the one with the decoration. First one to eat from it so far this year that I've seen. They really want their old tree back! Especially since there is a hawk hanging around the feeders. I have seen him 2-3 times but never when I have my camera handy.
One last shot.

These guys really posed well for you. Putting that branch near the feeder is a good idea.
Oh the things we do to attract those little darling feathered fliers!!! Looks like it's working out for you!! Great shots!
Hi Mary...it is to bad you lost that tree...it is so much
better if there is cover for the birds to hide in !
Well your downy seems content and he is wearing his Chritmas red hat lol..I also see you have the wreath out for the birds! : }
Good shots!!

they say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, it looks like it is the same with woodpeckers.
Definitely a DOWNY sort of day, Mary... You got some great pictures... I love your 'decorated' bird feeders too.
Merry Christmas.
Hugs,
Betsy
Oh, what great pictures of the downy! He's one of my favorite woodpeckers. I need to get suet feeders out to see what kind of birds they will attract here.
I haven't seen our hawk lately, and am glad, though it was great getting those pictures that day! You tickled me saying you hope your hawk only eats the house sparrows! :-) Loved all the comments you left the other day on my different posts! Yes, I will send you my phone number so we can get in touch the next time you are in Tucson! I'd love it! I'm so glad you visit your sister here. You are the third blogger I have as a friend that has told me they visit here every year and want to get together. I think that's wonderful!

Beautiful shots of the Woodpeckers Mary.
Downy's are so cute. We have them as occasional visitors here.

You know, I took a couple or three photos the other day of a downy woodpecker I think, but have not downloaded them. Will do that after while.
Lots of Downeys here, and I must get the pinecones filled with peanut butter.
